New 4x strategy game just came out. It's real-time, which is scary because there's always so much going on, but the AI is so good that usually your ships can get on with the knitty-gritty without you getting too much involved. It's very innovative - this game could easily be a nightmare of micro-management (especially seeing as it's real-time) but it isn't at all.
Anyway, anyone else got it? If not check it out.

I haven't got it, but a friend of mine did, and I ended up playing it more than he did. I didn't play it enough to really get into the endgame stuff; I normally got demolished after a few hours by the computer.
The major thing I noticed about it was that it rivals Starcraft for sucking up time. I haven't gamed till the sun came up without realizing it since I first played the SC campaign.

I'd throw a guess out that he meant Sins, but if not, enlightenment would be good.

Sword of the Stars. I've never played it, but I have a couple of friends who think it's the best game ever, so maybe I should.

I like Sins. Played a fair bit of single player, and a few interesting multiplayer games.
Very good fun. Nothing like Stars.
Basically feels like an RTS with the tech tree and scale of a TBS.
I massively prefer it to SotS (another simplified take on the genre, aiming for easy multiplayer) which I did also enjoy.
Both games are (relatively) cheaply available online from their publisher, Stardock.

Well, I am far from an advanced player at this point. I keep learning so much in the early stages of a game that I keep restarting so I can do better. What I have learned, in regards to the mobility problem, is this:
Speed matters. Light frigates might not do a lot of damage or take a lot of damage, but they are fast enough to respond to threats on different fronts.
Fronts matter. If you expand too much too early, you will have to spend too many early resources on planet development, and you will not be able to field forces to repel invasions on all of your fronts. Instead, you should expand carefully, not exposing new fronts when you can avoid it.
Diplomacy matters. If you want to take out the empire to your left, you'd better do what you need to do to keep the empire to your right happy. Give him credits, do his missions, whatever. But you don't want him sending his main fleet against your weaker flank while your main force is 5 sectors away in a big battle for a new planet.
In other words, I haven't really solved the "mobility problem" because I don't think it is something you solve. It is an integral part of this universe, and you have to adapt to it.
Also, I play the game with slow income, research, and culture, and fast building and ship speed.

No, it's always made for offense. Basically, because defense doesn't work unless you control an entire star system. Think of it this way. Your front has multiple planets on it. If you put your entire fleet on one of those planets, they scout, and attack somewhere else, killing half your planets before you can bring them to battle. If you attempt to avoid this by splitting your fleet, then they just pool their fleet and kill one of your fleet portions, after which they have a stronger fleet than you and you're screwed anyway. Hence, you can't blockade effectively, and you can't do a Mahan strategy because you can't bring someone to battle without their consent (Forewarning or equivalent tech). So, the game forces everyone to play a Mao strategy, and spread their operations out as much as possible, to try to kill your opponent faster than he kills you. It's basically like Stars! with everyone playing AR. Less of a problem at faster speeds, simply because it's actually possible to save planets.

Do planetary defenses (guns and hangars) have no effect at all?

I have played sins & sots both. sots is by far the superior game.
sins just encourages turtling and culture domination because of the insanely high bountying between humans.
also the pirates and blackmarket are wack. sots is a far better game. you can almost infinetly mod the sots .gob file. sots was made with the modders in mind.
the research/resource split is very easy and turn summary page really crunches mm.
I really hate the stupid annoying remarks your race says everytime you select anything. I always play sots with the sound off. when you have 40+ vs 40+ dn battles amd try to zoom in to see the battle crashville. sots is better game but equally annoying in its own ways. if anyone knows how to get the load screen animes out of the game pm me pleasee

1 very important thing I forgot to add about sots is that it is very touchy about drivers. if you do not have the most up to date drivers the game will crash your comp like a champ. I cannot play rome total war with this game on my comp w/ updated drivers. so I flip flop those games and the drivers for them
