Like about two thirds of global users, contrary to the poll response by the 50 users on this site, I still use win98 on my Stars! machine and my system quite simply does not require manual editing of registers for association.
If I want to review or change what I did later I go to start menu, settings, folder options, file types, and scroll down to x2 (file in this example) to edit and view the settings.

Great append. I agree it is better NOT to mess with Regedit but in this case it is safe if you do exactly what I had stated. It is much better to do it as described above by BlueTurbit with no Regedit involved. I can confirm it works the same for Win 2000 and Win XP. In this case follow BlueTurbit's instructions and when you get to the file type, highlight it by clicking on the file type, then hit the delete key. I was not able to find this easy method when I used Microsoft help.
