http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ <---- online virus scanner. Takes a while on a 56k - but it's always 100% up-to-date and it's a good way to check your system for a virus.
The hotmail trick from gible is a solid idea. Congrats.
Fact: The vast majority of virus made worldwide are made by the anti-virus companies. This is for several reasons...
1. to make sure they are one step ahead of bored people at home with nothing better to do.
2. to sell more virus scanners.
I'm happy for them to do this. It's no different than PC security companies hiring hackers to break up their system... so they can plug and fix any holes they have.
And that's no different to safe makers, who again hire the best safe crackers to crack their safes
