Most of what needs to be known about overgating can be found in the time-honoured Stars! Advanced and Technical FAQ v1.1:
* http://www.starsfaq.com/advfaq/guts2.htm#4.6

Additionally:
* vanishing happens only for mass-overgating or when the accumulated damage exceeds 100%
* losses to the void occure as soon as you get over the safety mass (plus a very few kt due to rounding)
* ships of ITs do get damage but they aren't lost from overgating
