It is indeed more effective to sweep past the filed. You can use the numbers the program tells you you need to sweep to the center of the field, those should be enough, afterall you go past the center which means more chance to hit and in fact less chaff needed ...

If you see more chaff surviving than expected, this might be your problem: Stars! checks the *distance* a ship needs to travel to calculate chance for minehits, NOT the speed.
For example a ship that is at 36ly from the center of a field and set to warp9 will be calculated as going warp6, not warp9. (For fuel usage however it will spend the amount needed for warp9.)
Now you can fix that with aiming past the field. Wink

making sure you go 65ly if you want to sweep at warp9.
