He didn't get tech from invasion, he got it from colonization.
I've never seen it before, but I think the tech gain check for colonization and battle (and invasion) happens at the same time, sometime pretty quickly after invasion. I do know that when you get tech from battle, scrapping, or invasion, what you get is the # of resources to get the next level, so it does make sense that you'd get only one from both colonization and battle. However, you should be very close to the next level.
Hmm, did the order of messages go: colonization, gain tech message, battle? This can't be right, battles happen before colonization.
That's what it sounds like from your message, but I'd have expected it to be battle, colonization, gain tech.
I'd like to know the exact order of messages you received.
You can get multiple tech from any event, it takes some work and/or luck...
If you get enough tech from colonization, you can get multiple levels of tech (4% HE does it often). Also, if you're researching one field and are close to that level, and have the next field set to something cheap, and you get tech from battle/scrap/invasion in the field you're researching, the excess resources get applied to the next field, which could get you a few levels in the right circumstances.
