It is stored in the stars ini file in a hashed form.

You just need to copy the ini file to stars2.ini and then enter your 2nd serial. You can then copy whichever ini file you want before startin up stars to use that serial.

True. My guess is a 're-release' just means putting in a nice new box and there won't be any significant updates.
