Problems might be created with such a strategy because Ron has no way to know if the serials he generates are absolutely new ones or duplicates of other existing legit ones.

Suppose he generates a considerable amount of serials. Would you easily accept the risk to be the legit original of one of his possible duplicate serials and being banned from Autohost all of a sudden without previous warning?

As presumably the only remaining and certainly the largest on-line community of Stars! players, I think we should take it into our hands to secure the future on-line playability of Stars! on Autohost.

Considering the fact that a rogue serial number generator has been publicly released and conflicts will occur, I think Ron should build a database containing all the serial numbers, even if more than one, of all the members of this community, or a convenient form of hash thereof, as soon as possible, so that he can not only ban players based on serial numbers because of their behaviour if need be, but also prevent anybody from using a serial number that has been registered in his database on behalf of somebody else of our comunity and provide some sort of defense of the longest standing member in case any kind of disputes arise inside it.

This is the only way to assure participating at Autohost hosted games will remain enjoyable from now on, as otherwise any unscrupulous participant can ruin a game either from the start or jumping in as a replacement. Not only that, but they will stonefacedly affirm it is the other guy that is cheating, creating a very rare atmosphere within the comunity.

Depending on how these serial number issues are handled now and were in the past by vendors of Stars!, maybe they could be contacted to organise some sort of joint database or any other valid mechanism to check serial numbers against their sales databases.

Just a few loose thoughts on the matter.

If we were esteemed intelligent 'enough', they would have contacted us.
If we can not find them, either we are not smart enough, or they are smarter at hiding.
