Hey! I've been wondering, anyone got some old Stars Patches? like. 2.7h or earlier? I've got the 1.1 and the most modern... But I'd like to see what it looked like earlier. Anyone got something like that? A good 2.0 would be great, cause I could upgrade it and see the game evolve.... Just for curiousity's sake... Anyone got anything like that?

Isn't 2.6i same as 2.7i minus sounds?

My original game diskettes are 2.6b. I was thrilled with the upgrade to 2.6b at the time, because I began playing Stars with 2.6a shareware. Or was it V2.5? Coulda been that - it was a LONG time ago.

In V2.6a or V2.6b (can't remember for certain) the ships used kt measurements of fuel for travel (which was real weight, just like any other cargo). Somehow it seemed even more complicated back then but I don't remember why exactly - maybe the consumption rate mechanics was smoothed out later. Normal travel by any ship was kind of like what an IS player goes through when shipping half-filled freighters of colonists, but in reverse; the load got significantly lighter each turn.

Anyways, changing the fuel mass to an insignificant size was one of the most wonderful improvements to the game to this day, IMO.

If you want V2.7 upgrades I can't help you, but I probably have every upgrade from V2.6b to present on diskettes, somewheres. It was necessary at one time because for a long time the upgrades were cumulative, and you needed them all. Only the latest ones consolidated all the upgrades in one patch.

Fond memories. Glad this game is still very much alive. Says a lot for it, doesn't it? What other 8-9 year old games does anyone still play?
Very Happy Uh-huh, exactly. NONE.

Can I get a copy of 2.6b from you?
Oh and I'd like the updates too!

Assuming nobody tells me it's illegal or immoral, I don't mind. Smile

My game diskettes of v2.6b are retail however; I've never tried installing and playing it without the serial number so I don't know if it will work at all without it. (and obviously I'm not going to give mine away!) Very Happy

PM me your email address and I'll try emailing the zip files to you. I'll look through that dusty filebox of 3.5" diskettes and see if I can find all the upgrades.

Wow! I can remember (vaguely) when fuel counted as weight. I was thinking that was 1.x, though. I thought that by the time 2.0 came about, fuel was minimal weight.

You are right, it does bring back some fond memories!

Oops! I was wrong! Confused It appears that the weight of fuel was changed from kT to mg in version 2.5.

While I don't have the patch, I do have the release notes for the 2.0b to 2.5 upgrade. It is a plain text file that does bring back a lot of memories. Big changes were afoot including:

  • New Anti-Matter Fuel Model
  • Minefield Changes
  • Waypoint Task Changes
  • New Mineral Model
  • New Production Model
  • and 2 (count 'em 2) New Primary Racial Traits

The file is about 10K. Let me know if you would be interested in reading it.

Well, I got into Stars very recently. I mean J patch was out when I arrived, but I played alot with the i patch.. uh.. 2.7 for both. It wasn't until I introduced Stars to another friend who really got into this community that my first friend and I realized there WAS a community of Stars players. We had to upgrade to J to get here. But I still use 2.70i a lot though.. Smile

But yeah, I didn't get into this game until one summer when I was bored out of my mind (no new games for a LONG time) and I was listening to a war story over the phone and... Well. I just said, "Whatever this game is called I want it, I don't care what it is." That's the bordem talking. And I've been here ever since. Smile

Eventually I found the 1.1 version and was like "WOW! look at all the stuff that used to be in it!" So... I dunno. I guess I'm just living all your fond memories backwards. Smile Or trying to.

Hmm, oh well, guess I was wrong. The shareware I started on had the kt fuel measurement, and in retrospect I thought it was v2.5, but I was working from memory and my memory has never been that great. Guess the shareware I started on was earlier than V2.5.

You'd think with my experience going back that far I'd be good at this game, but I'm not. Laughing

Maybe I'm a tard. Razz

Sure I'd like to look over the release notes. See what's different from version to version...
