Lately, I have been contemplating the nature of the tech available to the Stars player. It seems as if the technology tree has been well developed for the first 10 tech levels. After a player has reached higher levels the tech tree thins out and the available tech is somewhat sparse.
Please Note: this is not a criticism of the tech in the Stars universe. I think the available tech is balanced and quite nifty. I, however, am in contemplative mode...
Considering this contemplation, I wandered around in a few thoughts.
Has there been any additions to the available tech in the updated versions of stars?
If so was the tech modified? Or were there additions of whole new technologies?
To further that thought, would it be possible to add a whole new series of tech devices in future versions of stars. Either specifically to each PRT or in general to the individual tech branches.
I had a few Ideas about what kinds of tech would be cool.
Like a powerful Bio weapon that could kill the whole crew of a starship. The result would be that the starship would "drift derelict" and could be collected for most or all of its minerals after the battle.
Or a mechanical device added to the star-base to increase the planetary resources...

I had an idea like that once for a ship component called the "Marine Contingent" - a Range 0 weapon that allowed you to capture an enemy ship instead of destroy it (after the old Broderbund/SSI game "Warp Factor" - anybody play that?). I figured a Marine Contingent could defend against other capture attempts as well. I thought that would be cool.
Of course, this was when I was a comparative newbie, and thought that Stars was still being supported/developed. The sad truth is that the only folks who have done anything significantly new with Stars during the last few years have been Verker (VML-mod) and LEit (FreeStars). You could make your pitch to them, but I doubt any of us will (ever) see any significant changes to the Stars Universe. I did hear a rumor about a year ago that someone was looking to produce and distribute Stars: Supernova Genesis Neon Pickle Fish (thought I'd add a few more words to the title since it kept growing and growing), but so far there has been nothing but the dead silence of cold, black space.
I hope I don't get flamed for mentioning the Unmentionable Game yet again!!

FreeStars isn't anywhere near done yet, so don't get your hopes up just yet. Something like ship capture should be possible, however it won't be in the first version - that's going to be as close to Stars! as I can get it, with a few obvious bugs fixed.
