Jeff,
What about an expansion pack for Stars! I'd pay for one. I know that EI still has rights to Stars! and that the ownership issue for SSN is up in the air. Perhaps an expansion pack for Stars! would do three things:
1. Generate income for you (and EI)
2. Generate interest in SSN from publishers by calling attention to both you and your products...given the huge success of the proposed expansion pack.
3.Please me a great deal.

BTW ... one of the things I have always liked about Stars! is the interface and graphics: clean, crisp and uncluttered. I think it is loads better than MOO2, MOO3 or even, in many respects, SSN. No flashing lights, neon colors, space occupying graphics that mean nothing...just clean data concisely presented, a model of clarity and purity of function....sigh...makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over...

That is one of the funniest things that I have heard.
I wouldn't exactly have used the word graphics (I think interface was good enough) when talking about Stars! Remember we are talking about the glorified spreadsheet here.
Seriously, I agree with you. Stars! is nice and clean, you never have to worry about junking up your screen with the "new and improved" interface options that never work.
On the note of a Stars! expansion pack, I would love to see an expansion of Stars! with more tech levels/items, a couple new LRT's, etc. But where exactly do you propose Mr. Mcbride and Co. get the money to fund this expansion pack? I mean, money is the reason that they are not working on S!SG so how would they be able to suddenly find the cash to complete and expansion to Stars!.
I too would be greatly pleased to see an expansion pack, but not at the cost of developing and producing S!SG.

I am sure that Jeff has a cookie jar full of cash somewhere.
Seriously, I doubt if it would take much financing. The product IE sells it almost exactly the same as what the Jeffs had done as shareware. No big team of animators, artists, specialty programmers and groupies would be required for Jeff to put together an expansion with a few fixes, PRT/LRT additions, new hulls, an editor, AI improvements and various other goodies.
As far as the graphics go, change nothing! Nothing irritates me more than some pretty game with animated troops and tanks on the strategic map. This is a war! Give me NATO standard symbols every day (wonder what they are for a space BB...?). There is a reason the military uses the map and unit symbology it does: information and clarity/lack of ambiguity. Leave the animated cuties for the teenage shooters. I want a strategy WARgame.

The problem with an expansion pack is that you essentially have to buy the game all over again, and people who have the pack can't play with those who don't. And it'll just make more balance issues.
My vote is for a FreeStars that fixes AR and possibly adds in some new features later on after extensive balance testing.
