Hi.
I'm a long time fan of stars, and are trying to preach the game to some of my friends. But one is meeting a particularly irritating problem
So he is running Windows 7 Premium
Using dosbox, with the files from the wiki.
The password is one of my own (I have bought multiple throughout the years)
The problem is that he must type the code all the time, as though the game doesn't remember that he already have used the code.
We haven't gotten around to multiplayer yet, but it bugs him on every turn in singleplayer.
Do anyone know how to get around this problem?
All help is greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if this will help, but there is comment on the serial number in the section on the stars.ini file here: http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Files_Used_in_Stars!
The issue with the problem you mention might be the stars.ini file is missing or cannot be found by the game. The link above says Stars! will run without the .ini file - but it will keep prompting for the serial number, which seems to be what is happening.
I use the Windows 7 XP VM and can't really help on dosbox. In my set up the stars.ini file is in the C:\Windows directory as it would be on a normal XP machine. My stars.ini has a line called GameID which I guess is the serial number although it is not recognizable and seems to be written in something like hexadecimal or is otherwise encrypted.

Ps - nt exactly related, but having used dosbox, oracle vm with win98 and oracleVm With winXP, let me tell you that the 3 gb that winXP vm takes is WORTH it....
Throw dosbox in the recycle bin and spend the 600-700mb in getting the files and just use the winxp VM to pay stars.

BeeKeeper wrote on Sat, 28 January 2012 15:51 | The problem is the player has Windows 7 Premium - for which the XP VM will not work. It only works on Professional and Ultimate versions. I understand you can download the XP VM onto a Premium installation but it will not run.
If it was me I would upgrade, but it is for the player to decide.
I did find there are other solutions, the How-To Geek website has an article about using the free VMWare player but this solution does require you have a copy of Windows XP which you can use. No doubt there are other options available.

I'm using win 7home premium too, and the oracle vm works 100% fine for me.
Just get the wix xp iso using google and ask a friend (hello there!) for an extra winXP serial if they have it... (sure thing).

That will work as long as you don't play in the same game. If you are using the same stars!.ini file, then you are using the same Stars! serial number, which will trigger the copy protection if you are playing in the same game.
