If the host extends the schedule as they fancy, then they'll never miss, while anyone else can.
|
OTOH, I can't remember ever denying a player's request for an extension.

I wont call it borderline cheating, but I will call it rude, if the playing host doesn't send a small note out to the players.

From that comment I infer you'd prefer an email over an update to the AH page. An email would certainly be the desired method of communication of any changes to the game, including the generation schedule.
But extending that suggests hosts should never post any messages on the AH page because someone might never look at it. Even someone who gets their turn via email and has a shortcut to the standard upload page would never see the game page. So should we simply remove that functionality from AH?
I don't think so. As a host, I find it a nice way to remind people of rules, provide incidental updates (reminder: we're going to take a break over the holiday weekend), etc. So I would have some expectation that players would look at the page. In fact, even if I did use AH client, if the game didn't gen right away, I think I'd go to the game page to see what was up.
So if you use AH Client I understand you don't need to go to the game page, but as a player I would recommend that you take a gander at it every now and again.
Cheers,
Void

True, but any person would know, or learn to check the game page in case of such 'events'.
Take me for example.
If I had contd. using the AH client and if I was really following my game, then a delay would definitely have me firing up the SAH game page as well as checking on the SAH game sub-forums to see what's going on.

Yes, you did.

I think that's the main takeaway - it detracts from the enjoyment of the game.
Having spoken to the host, the root cause is lack of time. To the point that he misses submitting his own turns. So it's not as if this is SOP for any time he needs more time for his own turn, although I believe that does happen.
On one hand, I'm grateful to the hosts out there who are willing to take on the burden of getting a game going and running it. I had been thinking of hosting and playing in a game, myself, but what this and other experiences have taught me are (1) make sure you have the time to do it properly and (2) don't play in a game you're hosting - or vice-versa!
C'est la vie. The game is still enjoyable and at 2440 everyone is still in it, so the outcome is still positive.
Cheers,
Void

A playing host should be careful with extending gen time or placing the game on hold when that benefits the host as a player or the host's allies, and I generally avoid doing so, or give as long warning as possible about it, so the other players know what to expect.
I did however place the game The Wheel of Life IV (where I am playing host) on hold without warning because I needed a hold. I explained the reason for the hold in the "Message from game host" section of the game page, and mentioned that I would do that for any player in the same situation.
I did not get any complaints about that hold, but then, the reason was that my HD had crashed, so I had to get a new HD and reinstall Windows and all software, and that of course delayed when I could submit my turn. Fortunately I had backup of all important data, so all that was lost was the cost of a new HD and a lot of time.
That new HD also has a few benefits relative to the old one. Then new HD is quieter, faster and (according to the store clerk) much more reliable. It is also 1 TB instead of 500 GB, but that was because the store did not have that model in stock in the 500 GB version.
I know some store clerks will try to sell the most expensive product, but that store is on a stretch of road with 20+ computer hardware stores within 500 m, so those stores have to compete on quality of service in order to survive. The real name of that street is "Falkoner Allé", but that stretch of the street is also sometimes referred to as "Silicon Alley"

Honestly, I'm not really bothered about a turn delay, if someone requests it.. I just want to know about it, so I have enough time to play the next turn and so that I don't keep waiting for the turn to gen.
How much did the 1tb 3.5" HDD cost you?

That 1 TB 3.5" HDD cost me DKK 410,- (US$ 73,-). I could have found a cheaper model, but that would have been slower, noisier and/or less reliable, and possibly all three.
