I'd say cruisers.
DD's are nice but the lack of sheilds will kill you once Jihads come about.
FF's are fantastic!!!! But the low base armour will kill you.
BB's would be wonderful... but by 2450... you'd be lucky to have them... even luckier to have reasonable tech.
Cruisers are reasonable to have. Some jihad cruisers and Bazooka cruisers would make up a formidable fleet.

2440 would be impossible!
There's too many planets to bomb in relation to how many planets you own, especially considering the game doesn't have accelerated start.
It'd take a PP to conquer by 2440 because it's the only race that can slow or even stop another enemy's growth from turn 1 or 2. I suppose WM would come next but it'd have to be a quick victory.
I'd say 2460 or 2470 is reason able to expect.

That's what I'm thinking. The wasted resources and minerals in the early period trying to establish some form of control could be better spent researching that much needed slight edge. I'd rather take some time until I get range 3 beamers at least with some reasonable bombs.
If you ask me (and you probably wont so I'll tell you anyway)
IS and WM are probably the two races that will be able to take control of enemy worlds easiest. All it'll take is a fair few people (easy with space breeding of IS and the 1.65 attack value for WM pop-dropping) and a load of LBU's.
Note to self... if I'm gonna lose my HW then upload ALL my minerals to the attacking fleet... make sure that they get shafted for taking my world!! lol.

Thats why most people link to starsFAQ and point out "everything but chaff is cheating" or something to similar effect.
There have been games in which certain bugs are allowed (e.g. the starbase bug, fleet dodge, etc...)
From what I've seen lists of whats not allowed tends to actually be a very short list of what IS allowed!!

Correct, but the problem is that the Stars!FAQ list does not hold all bugs! Last time I checked it didn't had the bug listed that you mentioned ... while it is around a long time already ...
True, you can list what is allowed but there are lots of other cheats around that are not listed (and some are not really program related), like players joining a game controlling two races, it's part of the ... what's the word ... "etiquette"? to not do this, but there are people who say: "hey, the host did not disallow that! So it's fair!" <sigh>

FF seem the reasonable ship at 2450 especially if you happen to be IS.

Only one planet.
Quote: | Having only four players would help that but since there is only 24 planets in the galaxy, everybody having BBs is still quite good. Was everybody -f or tri-immune HE or was there anything else that would help everybody research to const-13 with so few resources?

All OWW, they have enough resources to get the techs below 14, don't bother researching the higher tech levels, those start to get too expensive for a OWW economy,

Ah, a OWW. I should have thought of that. I played in a OWW once and completey forgot about it. I guess in a tiny sparce, alot of people might try a one planet strategy.
