I have been running the 2.7J-RC2 patch for a long time with no problems. Then I discovered the RC3 patch and when I applied it, suddenly Stars asks me for a serial number every time I open the game.
I noticed that in previous patches, I was replacing the stars!.exe file, which is about 3 Mb, with another 3 Mb file. In the RC3 patch, the file is called stars.exe with no exclamation point and is 3 Mb. The file by the same name in the Stars directory is only 12.1 kb. It seems like there is some kind of disconnect here between the filenames and sizes.
I've tried applying the patch as-is, and I've tried changing the name to stars!.exe before applying it, but either way it asks me for a serial number every time I open the game. It also activates the copy protection when I generate.
What gives?

The simple solution is to enter your serial number. JRC3 added some extra serial number checking to ban some invalid serial numbers.

If your serial number is a valid serial number that came when you purchased Stars!, make sure you enter it with exactly as you received it. The serial numbers are case sensitive.
If your serial number is on the banned list, then you need to contact Ron here at autohost and purchase a new legal serial number.

You should be getting usurper messages too iirc...access to %windir%\stars.ini hasn't changed?

No you wouldn't. You'd just lose all your settings upon exiting.

I have recently reinstalled my Stars! retail version
and at present have patched to 2.7i
I have to wait for my son to return my manual to install the j patch exe file as my serial numbers are in the book cover
I peeled the stickers off and pasted all into 1 of the 3 manuals
to reduce my manual storage
What concerns me is I may find my legitimate Retail purchased
serial numbers may no longer be valid due to hacker lists of numbers
This happened to me on 1 copy of my 3 Diablo 2 serials
I own the original CD and manual from a retail purchase
but it is banned due to hackers distributing the serial number
I can understand the need to ban serials that occur in mass distribution due to hacking
What I dont understand is why a person cannot MAIL in the
legitimate software for replacement when a valid legally obtained
serial number/software copy is HACKED
