In my first game, I am playing CA and trying to be everyone's friend. No flaming on that one, please - it is a public post, so what else could I say here?
The main reason for setting everyone to friend so far is actually that it allows me to read their hab ranges. Once I scanned an inhabited planet, Stars! is showing the hab ranges of that race in the planet pane. Yet, I am missing a convenient way for getting from the visual representation to the actual numbers (g, °C, mR ranges). After all, if the program knows the values, should't I be able to see the numbers somewhere? I cannot find a way to have Stars! tell me the numbers. Xtreme Borders is clearly not using that data and its guesses (based on all inhabited planets, even if the pop is dying off) are totally off even after I visited a race's HW. Does anyone know a program that displays scanned hab values?

Ok, from there you lost me. Read their hab ranges after you set them to friend? Not that I know of. Stars! does show you the center of their hab range after you've scanned their hw, but that doesn't tell you where the end points of the range are. So when you say the hab ranges are you just talking about the midpoints? Stars! tells you the g, C, and mR midpoints for a planet on the right side of the planet pane. For instance, scan the planet of a Humanoid race and you find out that the hab centers are 1.00, 0, and 50. But finding out the whole range for a race, including what the end points are? I think you'd have to ask them to find out those.
Yeah, bread too.

Same question was already raised 2 topics below, see: The CA Crystal Ball
Not that there seems to be an easy way, though.

Thanks. So the question becomes: Does anyone know the exact structure of the m-files? It contains a wealth of information (with more added through deduction/educated guesses) that seems untapped by programs like XBorders, I-Trade, SIR, or Stars Notebook.

Thank you. After trying out all the other suggestions, that proved to be the easiest way (no transparent graphics on most of my PCs video cards). The size is exactly the same and with some shifting around I can place the race wizard exactly above the planet window. Using a simple sheet of paper to measure, one can get the exact values (esp. when using the hab center to confirm).
Thanks again,
