Status of second round bidding:
1) Icebird -> bid in
2) Dethdukk -> bid in
3) PricklyPea -> bid in
4) Joseph -> bid in
5) Steve -> bid in
6) Backblast -> bid OUT
Just need bid from Backblast, and then we can start on final round (4th round has been cancelled, due to time constraints)

Bidding for 2nd round will end at 11:00am GMT (10 hours from now) then we'll commence the final round of bidding.
I'll then give 24 hours for the final bids to come in (so will require all the final round bids to be in by 11:00am GMT tomorrow.)
24 hour turnaround should be fine for anyone (game is advertised at 25hours, and bidding is much quicker than taking a turn.) The rush is to improve the chances of getting PricklyPea's race in before his holiday, so there is no delay getting the game up. If anyone expects this to be an issue, please let me know asap.
If the last bid for this round comes in quicker, then the deadline for final round will also be sooner, so please make sure you all check your email every 12 hours or so for the next couple of days, so you don't accidentally miss the deadline.

2nd round bids have been compiled...
The lowest possible winning bids in each field were seen to be:
Energy: 13
Weapons: 14
Propulsion: 17
Construction: 15
Electricity: 17
Biotech: 21
Note that the lowest bidder in each tech often has proposed a lower bid, these numbers are what each field would've been won for, if it had been the first field resolved.
Fields were resolved in a preference order dictated by the lowest proposed bid.
The results came out in this order:
Weapons was resolved first, at level 14
Electricity was resolved second, at level 17
Energy was resolved third, at level 19
Construction was resolved fourth, at level 18
Propulsion was resolved fifth, at level 25
Biotech went last, at level 26
The change in the order of resolution caused by a low energy bid caused a jiggle in the prices.
There seem to be some fields going pretty cheap, and some very tightly contested. Interesting.
*******
The FINAL round of bidding is now open.
I'm setting a time limit of 25 hours (so 6am GMT) so we get the bidding over promptly.
I'll send you all individual emails, as before, to advise you of what you are winning on, and to remind you of the time limit.

NingunOtro wrote on Tue, 21 March 2006 05:13 | As I see it, the more rounds you have, the more the results converge mathematically to 0 in all fields. Considering that most people should have built an adecuate bidding strategy based on precisely 4 rounds, and not waiting without forethought for each new round, you can drop one round if you advertise long enough beforehand to let everybody adjust their strategy.

No, it doesn't work that way. Since gaining tech levels under 10 is really a marginal benifit it's not that hard to research even when it's expensive, especially when someone else is *garanteed* to get a tech at level 26. Who would bid zero since that nets them nothing? It's generally not wise to reduce your bids *too* much, and this notion will favor the low first-bidders because they get dibs on that particular number. I expect that the changes will be much less in the final bidding rounds, things will be interesting with the extra information divuldged. But I do agree that there is little benifit to having many rounds. 2-3 is a good number, 4 did seem excessive. The players will now think hard about what tech they really want and we may have a few small bidding wars for them.
I myself am standing on my bids since I was quite happy with the results.

Consider the facts right now Weapons level almost halved from top, Bio intact. If most bidded level halves each round, it will end at 7 next turn, and 3 or 4 after that, to end at 1 at the final round.
|
I'll bet you that weapons will not half next round Why bother when you can pick WM and get that free anyway?
Quote: | What I wonder is if there will be anything of the game concept left to enjoy after the bidding is over.

I believe this game will be quite enjoyable. If nothing else to see the lopsided struggles and different race designs, it'll be a hoot!

This looks all wrong! Energy should be first, followed by weapons (if it's still there). Fix Fix!

It's fine. Weapons went first because the lowest bid was for that field (but to beat off the other bids, they didn't have to go so low, which is why it actually went at a higher level.)

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't bid down to zero, because when bidding you always have to consider whether your bid compares well to tech26 in the least desired field. If we got down to 1/1/1/1/1/26 I know I'd be backing the guy with the 26 level start, no matter what tech it is.

BackBlast wrote on Wed, 22 March 2006 16:27 | Umm... was energy=13 a typo then?

No.
Someone bid low energy, 2nd best bid was 14, so if this tech went first it would go for 13 (which is what I documented)
Someone bid low weapons. 2nd best bid was 15, so if this tech went first it would go for 14 (which is what I documented)
However, the lowest weapons bid was lower than the lowest energy bid, so weapons went first. It'd be more obvious if I listed the actual lowest bids, but, like eBay these are secret (encourages more natural bidding, in my opinion)
Perhaps I've overcomplicated the system, but I like it and hey - we're nearly done.
Don't forget guys, I need those last bids by 6am GMT tomorrow.

Madman wrote on Thu, 23 March 2006 10:32 | I'm a bit surprised that Propulsion went out at 25 - I would have expected nearly everyone to bid 23 or lower, as you never need to research it after that.
Lucky people with prop and con I suppose - if they survive the person with high weapons
I hope there is a report in the Bar afterwards on how this game went.
If it turns out to be a really fun game and there are multiple other games like it in future, one solution to the 'how many rounds of bidding' might be setting up a web page in php or something to provide a continuous bidding system, that way people could log in to lower their bids whenever they like. This could finish when there is no effective change to 24 hours (or some time limit a week or so away, whichever happens first). That way, there could be real bidding wars, and all techs could reach their natural level.

I'm waiting with baited breath. There will definately be a game review. I'm planning to document key events in the game so a rough timeline can be published once the game is over.
I think this game concept will almost certainly be run again, in which case I would definately set up a bidding site of some sort. The method I am using to evaluate the bids is algorithmic, so there's no reason I can't program it into a active page of some sort, so people can see the effect of their bids immediately.

One small comment that I don't think weapons and const alliance was ever the most deadly possibillity. IMO there was much nastier options and if certain parties pick certain PRTs and work with each other the rest of you are in trouble. You need both good war tech AND good eccon. Enjoy.

Very true, lots of combinations here are deadly. I figure the enforced con/weap and 1st/2nd conflicts should be enough to keep the universe nicely fractured for quite some time.
I'm going to reserve any more detailed commentary (i.e. which tech winners I expect to do well and why) until after the game, as I don't want to influence race design or play.
