First off, nice ta meet y'all! This is my first post, so I thought I'd drop a line and say 'hi'. Which (as you may have noticed) I just did. Glad we got that out of the way. Razz

Ok! I've been an avid 4x gamer since the original MoO, and 4x games have always had a special place in my heart. Maybe I'm just a closet megalomaniac with a penchant for planet-sized superweapons and planetary invasions. Dunno. Anyway, I stumbled across a registered version of this Stars! game in a friends closet awhile back, (he gave it to me) and finally popped it in to play the other day, being somewhat bored with the current 4x offerings (which all seem to improve graphically, but in not much else)

I remember playing the Stars! demo way back when it came out, for about 5 minutes, and wrote it off as sub par and confusing. Boy am I dumb. Being somewhat older and *cough* wiser (not to mention mind-numbingly bored) I decided to give it a shot the other day, and was quite simply, blown away.

This game is, without a doubt, the finest 4x game I've ever played (and thats including all the modern offerings). The sheer volume of innovative things it does (ten years ago!) is amazing. With minefields, planetary scanners, true race design, incredibly deep combat, to name a few, who needs graphics? I love the fact that Stars! actually uses the spaces between the star systems, and that you have to police and patrol actual space to keep your borders secure. No more of that simplified 'star lane' crap here. No other game has really done that. It adds a whole new dimension to the strategy. The race design is phenonemnal too. Where most games, like Moo, let you tweak the growth rate and econonomics a bit, Stars! goes all out and lets you really make your own personalized race. I can't believe I passed this game by back in the day. It's good to see there are still a few people playing. I'm definately one of 'em.

Anyway, thought I'd rant a bit and introduce myself. once I get a bit better, I'll join an email game and learn some much needed humility Very Happy

See you around the galaxy!

There's quite a lot of articles you can read to learn here at Autohost, on StarsFAQ page http://www.starsfaq.com (check articles on economy first) and in google's group rec.games.computer.stars.

You'll be ready to contend for the top position in an all- beginner game when in your testbeds you repeatedly hit 25k or more resources at turn 2450 in a tiny packed uni with AccBBS start. You can even check for a mentor at http://www.groep7.co.za/mentor/index.htm.
BR, Iztok

Howdy again there, country cousin! Glad you decided to join in.

When you say all those nice things about Stars! ... well ... I just gotta like ya, now don't I? You show a remarkable intelligence, infinite wisdom, and an intuitive grasp of the things that are important in the universe. Very Happy

Unless you manage to beat me in a game later, in which case you are scum and not worth the DNA that is obviously wasted on you. Laughing < just kidding >

Other than my smart-alec greeting, I really don't have anything to add to what Iztok has said so accurately and eloquently. Learn how to manage a monster economy in a testbed and then try out a game or two. I've been hooked on PBEM for about 5 years now and, other than the occasional break here and there, I have no plans on stopping.
Thumbsup 2

Wake me up when my turn is due. Asleep at cptr
