EoF, I'm not certain why you're rabbiting on about this. I'm well aware of the behaviour of the various Windows version prior to Win8 wrt ini files and the %windows% directory.
For your clarification, Windows Vista and 7 both trick Stars! into thinking it has access to the %windows% directory when really the files are located [as above]. Actual access is neither required nor optimal.
My questions were to understand the extent of the changes introduced by Win8 and the effect they have on ancient software. What prior windows versions did is really only useful as a comparison.
