Why is a right-shifted hab cheaper than a left? |

In the race wizard, right-shifted habs appear cheaper than left-shifted habs. Strategic implications aside, is there something about the distribution of planets that makes left or right shifting better or worse? Or is it simply one of those strange behaviors of Stars?
Cheers,
Void

I suspect it was a deliberate false valuation...and it does bear out, left shifted races have less territory arguments (IME)

The following charts:
* Charts of habitability spread and mineral concentrations by Alan L. Kolaga
show that for temp and grav the extreme last clicks left and right give you less planets than the more centered clicks.
It also shows that this is not true for rad. But for radiation in the exteme right corner you get statistically a better mineral concentration.

Notice that the cost difference is not present before 14/13/15 clicks from centre, and that some clicks are redundant (e.g. 0.17g). The last nine clicks of grav and temp are worth increasingly less, and the last click of rad is worth nothing. The same diminishing returns on number of planets within a range also reduces the effectiveness of terraforming through those clicks (as you will encounter that number fewer planets within that range and perform less terra for the research cot to make it available). Nine clicks grav and temp plus 7 for basic terra puts a race outside of the cost difference between left and right shifted hab.

It's a rounding effect in the way the wizard calculates the desirability of your chosen hab - by summing up the hab values of lots of evenly spaced planetary habs in your chosen hab scheme.
