How do you guess another players hab range by seeing is HW?

Do we have tools to use?

You can tell where the centers are but not how wide the bands are.

Once you see the HW you know the center of each of the other players hab ranges. A little deductive reasoning from seeing other planets that the player sends pop to will increase your knowledge of his hab ranges.

For instance - you see that the HW has high radiation but then you see that the player colonizes and sends lots of pop to a planet with very low radiation. You can pretty much bet that he's radiation immune since there is no way that the HW would have very high radiation and the low radiation planet still be green any other way.

If you can see more than one of his planets then Xtreme Borders will show you the minimum and maximum values for each of the hab ranges for a race.

Thanks Ptolemy for sending the zip to both my mail accounts.

However there seems to be a problem. I am unable to load any game files in Xtreme borders. When i click "Load Data" and browse to my game folder, the program does not see any game files and so the "generate data ..." button is disabled.

What could be the reason?

Another thing was that when i was installing this util, i received messages about some files in my system being better versions that the files from xtreme borders and so i selected an option NOT to overwrite those files. Could this be the issue?

Thanks
keshav

First, in order to use the program you must open your Stars! game and use the Reprt -> Dump to Text File -> Planet Information AND, Dump to Text File -> Universe definition. This will create a Map file and a .pla file. If you edit your Stars.ini file in the Windows directory you should change the entry NewReports = 0 to NewReports = 1 under the [Misc] heading. IF the entry for NewReports isn't there then add it. Then you will create a .p[x] file where x is your player number.

Now when you run Xtreme borders you go to the directory where your game is and load the .map file.

There may be a problem with the files that the install wanted to overwrite - i.e. you may get a divide by zero error when you load the Stars! files. If this happens, you will need to install the program again to get the list of the files it wanted to overwrite then save your original files somewhere, run the install again and let it overwrite the files. This way if you run some other program that says you need the updated files, you have them.
