AutoHost Client 2.0 - Come 'n' get it! |

What is it?
The Stars! AutoHost Client is an application to make interacting with the AutoHost website and Stars! a little easier. Easier? Than AutoHost? Yup. See the feature list below. Existing users can simply replace their old ahclient.jar file. New users should read the homepage, then follow the link to the Sourceforge project page to download the jar file (or you can download it directly using the ahclient.jar link above).
AHClient 2.0's More Delicious Features:
- new and improved display - shows everyone's status
- Easier to setup - you still have to use / instead of \ for directory separators, but the rest is much easier
- Thanks to Ron's generosity, the polling is faster and much more complete
- The feedback when you upload, download, and screw up is much better
- Last, and definitely best, fleet analyzing! The client now has built in analysis tools to get fantastic amounts of information out of those pesky .F files. Included are: Lists of all cloaked fleets, total visible ship counts by type and owner, a listing of the top 20 or so war fleets, a listing of the top 20 or so bomber fleets.
As Good As Ever Features:
- one click turn downloads
- one click turn uploads (multiple x-files per game!)
- launches Stars! turns with one mouse click
- checks game status every 10 minutes
- creates .FXX and .PXX files for all files downloaded
- creates backups of every m-file downloaded
Here are screenshots of the main interface and the fleet evaluation area.
It runs great under Linux - see the FAQ. Best of all, it's easier on Ron's server since it uses FTP where possible and requires less bandwidth when doing a turn check.
If you run into any trouble PLEASE drop me an email.
Jeff

Sinla wrote on Fri, 23 July 2004 12:41 | O/T: hey, the snapshots are from Bug uni 3! How did that end anyway, you won? (you were AR IIRC, I had a nasty R/L period so had to give the game to a sub...)
|
Yes, Michael and I ended up winning that game. I was the AR and Michael was an IT. NASTY combination, especially in such a large game. As far as how it ended, after the Cockroaches were wiped out, Richard took over the Worms. Since we were out building him, he was forced to launch an attack on us. He fought a tactically excellent war, but didn't have the infrastructure or nub designs to carry the day. We caught a few of his larger fleets and wiped out most of his war fighting ability. After we knew it was all over but the actual bombing, we called it quits.
It was a very enjoyable game, with all the elements - diplomacy, strategy, and tactics.

With autohost just disappearing over the weekend, and all games going on hold, I have noted an annoyance, not neccessarily a bug.
It appears that AH Client does NOT update the status of the players if the game is on hold. Personally, with 5 games that I am hosting. If the player status was updated despite the fact that the game was on hold, that would be a boon; because then I would know when to turn the game active again.

donjon

Hmmm. I can't think of a reason why this would be. Can you send me an email with a list of games you have that are still on hold? In the meantime, I will ask Ron about setting up a game for me that i can test on.

Just FYI, I found that in order for the 'Launch Stars!' button to work, the folder(s) nor the stars.exe file can NOT have any exclamations (!) in them.

OK - was definitely a bug, but had nothing to do with games being on hold - it was never being updated. You had to restart the program to see the new statuses at the bottom (the individual statuses were OK). I just released a fix:

Hi!
Just browsing around...
... and had the following thought: Might it not be better to place this topic in the "Must Know" forum? Newbies in the forum are likely to look at that right away...

Hi nmid,
the settings for the Client are case-sensitive. Try entering the game name as
bigv
That might solve the problem. If not, don't hesitate to contact Jeff Hoyt, he is a very friendly person and certainly willing to help.
