Game info:
Players: 8
Skill level: Novice/Rusty
Ranked: No
Distribution Method: DropBox
Turn Generation: Whenever we have everyone's turn
Host is playing: Yes
Universe: Medium Normal, distant starting positions
Starting Conditions: AccBBS
Victory Conditions: None (not playing to completion, just as far as necessary)
Game Rules:
1) No alliances. Players may not optimise race designs for future alliance.
2) Chaff, split-fleet and repair after gating allowed. All other "cheats" forbidden (see Known Bugs (JRC3) - Player Exploitable Bugs / "Features" for info)
PRTs:
No restrictions - this is a learning experience, so feel free to make mistakes. There is more information available about each race type in the Primary Racial Traits section of the forum.
Player List:
-Beanspoon
-Goober (Not a novice or rusty, but it's good to have a more experienced player on hand to give tips etc, that is if you wouldn't mind Goober)
-Grizzly590
-Mogs
-Nmid (Intermediate but playing with experimental OWW race)
-Space Turkey
-Sprocket
-TRSMMaiden
Game parameters and rules currently negotiable, there's nothing special to this game, just nice and straight forward to get our edge back. I'd like to get this going ASAP so as soon as the current players are in agreement we'll be starting.

You are right - getting a bit ahead of myself there. That sounds good.
I think seeing as we have more players I'll bump it up to a Medium universe so there is a little more scope for empire building.

Well, I was thinking of trying out one of my experimental race ideas.
My OWW IS race that planned on taking out enemy HWs with pop-bombers got pretty badly pwned in KF1 :s.
I won't play my -f SS race xD.
|
A OWW IS vs a OWW IT. I'd say that the IS is always going to be at a signbificant disadvantage. So if you are going the OWW route, unless in a tiny, why not IT? PP also suggests itself in preference.
Once played -f SS against a WM in a duel. It won handily. Tried it against an IT and got whupped ignominiously. Nice thing about SS's in a duel is you know quite accurately what is going in to research. Once played a "double jeapardy" game where you play your own and the other players race and they do the same. Since one of the races was SS it was a simple matter to create a spreadsheet that worked out the approximate resource spend on tech. Since you know what both races have on both sides you could work out what the tech levels were. IIRC at one point, since I kept a record year on year, watching these numbers left me wondering where the research had gone and what had been done with the resources I couldn't see anymore. I looked at my outlying worlds and beefed up their defenses where I could see planet hopping lines of attack. When I got hit the next turn I realized I'd been d### lucky to notice it, because it hadn't actually occurred to me to look specifically for that. Now I would. So perhaps a duelling SS has that extra bit of merit - you can estimate when you might be attacked - but if you haven't got the juice to repel borders, it won't matter you know its coming.
As to you joining with an "experimental" race, I have no objection as it means there is another on hand to offer advice. Just bear in mind, we wouldn't necessarily being playing out the game to a finish.

|
Brief summary of events:
Beanspoon asks about new games in the Bar.
Goober points out not likely to occur right now. Offers duel for "training" purposes.
Sprocket contacts Beanspoon and gets invited to join in (which goober agreed to cheerfully).
Sprocket and Beanspoon have rusty/newbie friends who would like to join and Beanspoon advertises it as a new game with Goober "hosting" so that they can all see the details.
Goober bows () to the inevitable and is willing to let them all join in a training game, but run via dropbox as they are informal game(s) for educational purposes. It is not expected that these games will necessarily finish.
|
And I would like to point out how grateful I am Goober
I think we should get this game on the go - I've been thinking that seeing as this is a learning experience, we shouldn't put restrictions on race design, so we all have a chance to try out what we want to and learn from out potential mistakes.
With that said, everyone design your race files, make sure you put a password on them, and install dropbox. Then e-mail me with your address (if I don't already have it) and I'll share a dropbox file with you. In here we will put all the game files, and get this thing going!

That is correct.
sprocket wrote on Fri, 16 December 2011 18:17 | OWW can be pretty powerful in a small game with newbs, might not be a good training game for them but I have no objection, OWW are powerful in small universe but I don't consider them experimental.
|
It's ok, it's a chance for us all to experiment, and hopefully the newbs will learn a thing or two from the more experienced players too.
Of course if anyone thinks that we should perhaps increase universe size due to our ranks now expanding to 6, that might change the effectiveness of a OWW race.
Sprocket, have you heard anything more from your friend who wanted to join? If so, there is still time...

Reminds me of the 1 in 12 TT CA that was popular about 10 years ago.

Oh, I'm not playing an OWW race...
Not playing CA obviously, nor a SS.
