How about a virtual install of xp... then run it under that.

That's what I do. XP in a VM. If you have pro / ultimate edition you actually get a license and a pre installed VM that can integrate with the shell. Just search on 'XP Mode' and you should find info.

I've been away for a while... anyway, new install - thought I'd try stars out, ran into the 64bit problem.
Given that I don't have windows ultimate for the built in virtual XP option, anyone care to suggest the easiest way to set up a virtual machine for this?
|
I generally turn to Sun's Virtual Box, which runs XP(assuming you have a key) or Linux just fine. If you're happy with playing in a 1024x768 window there's a Dosbox installation of Win3.11 customised to run (only) Stars! downloadable at the wiki.

n my momentarily slightly to completly drunken state... I think it's absolutly fine to evaluate 64 or 32 or whatever bit architecture on how fine they can handle Stars!

Please Help Me
I've been trying off and on for over a decade to get the game stars. I only recently found this site. I have a windows 7x64 home premium Toshiba laptop computer with an 8 core i7 Q740 processor. I have a key but no CD. I have two questions:
1: How can I install the game? Is the STARS26JRC4.ZIP in the downloads section the full, playable game? Could I use it to play both multiplayer with other people on this site and single player?
2: How do I get this game to run on my computer? Is there a way that I can do this without needing a non-windows OS like linux or spending $50+ on a 7 pro upgrade/32 bit version of windows? Thanks.
PS: I am NOT a computer expert.

Thanks

A rar fil is a compressed file like a zip file. The freeware program 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) will unpack rar files, though it cannot make rar files (I do not know of any freeware program that can create rar files).

Thanks for all the help. I (hopefully) only have 1 more question:
what does this mean:
After installing DOSBox edit the (end of) dosbox.conf supplied to correct the path in the line "mount c c:\dosboxc"
I double click on the file and dosbox opens and quickly closes. It resembles what happened when I forgot to type system ("PAUSE"); at the end of my school's c++ hello world class project. What do I do? PS: to be more accurate about how much I know about commputers, I've taken 1 semester of c++. I've had an extremely small amount of exposure to C++ and xml, but almost nothing else.
PS: when the instructions said "associate .conf files with DOSBox", I assumed it meant to tell my computer that when ever it sees a file with the extention .conf, it means to open it with dosbox. Is this right? Many thanks.

Thanks for the response. Sorry for forgetting to update this but I figured it out late last night.
The file is NOT compatable with the new DOSBOX, you have to copy paste the last few lines into DOSBOX's config file. The stars! config file will not work. THanks anyways
PS: the other reason why I couldn't get it working is that dosbox apparently can't see the \ key on my keyboard (key works with every other program)... meaning that I couldn't write the \s needed to write file names and I had to find a work around.

It works just fine for me. The latest DOSBox version being 0.74. Tho in the readme it where says to use the command: "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe" -conf "C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf"
I instead used "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf "C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf"

Stars! only supports Dos/Win3.11 8.3 filenames so you shouldn't be putting \s in them.

Eagle of Fire wrote on Mon, 17 January 2011 23:00 | He still need the \ key for any kind of command which call for an expended directory.
Even if he only wanted to mount a drive from his main HD, he would still need to type \ several times. For example, to mount c:\games\oldgames, he would still need to type \ 2 times.

Yes, but he can(and needs to) edit the .conf file outside (before running) DOSBox
ETA: actually if he unpacks the rar to c:\ he doesn't even need to edit the .conf file.
