Battle screen keeps crashing

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this error

I get the following as soon as I attempt to view a battle :
"An error has occured in your app, bla bla | close | ignore"
Either way the app exits back to windows. but ignore adds the following:
"Stars! caused a Genberal Protection Fault in mod WAVEMIX.dll at 0001:3b7d"

I'm Running win2k,sp2.
I can remeber a while back mp3player caused a problem similar to this so I again uninstalled it but to no avail.
I now have windows media player installed and dont really want to uninstall that at the mo...
I did switch off battle sound effects and music, but it still crashes.
Is there anything I can do about this ... cause its a pain to swap pcs just to view me battles?

If turning sound off doesn't help, try downloading and using 2.6 version of Stars! It is the same but is without sound, and your serial number will work with it.

Usually if you download the wavemix file available at:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/tuomas.seijavuori/stars/
(which, incidentally is where you can still purchase legal serial numbers for Stars!)

this will fix the problems of the battle board crashing when using Stars v2.7.

I believe it is needed to use the "help" file in Stars!.

There is a version of the Stars! help file that has a very nice search option (I think it came with 2.7) That .dll is needed by that help file if you want to be able to do a search.
