I want to chaff sweep and attack an enemy planet.

There is a regular, and speed bump minefield there
(no heavies yet). They are both centered on the planet.

Do the chaff that miss the first field have a chance
to hit the second field? Or is there only one check
for each chaff to hit a minefield? If multiple
checks, which is first? By field type? or the field
that is reached first?

If I have an ally that is also willing to donate
some chaff to the cause, will the lower player
number do the chaff sweeping first?

I am familiar with several of the programs that
determine how many chaff are needed, but none of
them show how many I need for multiple fields...

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I wouldn't recommend trying to chaff sweep speed bumps.

I hate to say this (as I'm playing an IS and have speed bumps all over the place), but speed bumps are very easy to chaff sweep. The odds of hitting are very high. The only problem is that your chaff doesn't die, so you have to then issue orders for it next turn, and it takes up a fleet slot for two turns.

You have a separate chance to hit each type of field, however each ship can only hit one field before it stops.

What this means, is calculate the number of SHIPS to sweep the std field normally, and then add the number of HITS needed to sweep the speed bump.

For example to sweep a std field with 150 mines you need 15 hits, on average that will require 75 chaff. If it is just a speed trap, you need the same 15 hits, but 18 chaff should get you the 15 hits. So to sweep both fields, you need 75 for the std, and 15 more for the speed trap, or 90 total. It's a good idea to send a bit more then that to be safe.

I thought speed traps didn't decay much at all when hit. Guess I'm wrong again.. Smile That's what I get for not playing IS often.

Hi!
Here's what I found in newsgroup rec.games.computer.stars. I did some checking by myself. Works for every kind of mine.

Sweeping mines with Chaff's

OK, I've got the chaff-sweeping formula in all it's piecewise glory. (Why are there so many piecewise formulas in the Stars! code?)

Above 5000 mines, each ship impacting sweeps 1% (tested out to over 140 000 mines).

From 1000 to 5000 mines, each impact sweeps 50 mines.

From 200 to 1000, each impact sweeps 5%.

Under 200, each impact sweeps 10 mines.
