I first played Stars! about 8 or 9 years ago. I was introduced to the game by a friend of mine after I graduated college, and we were both between jobs with a lot of free time. Being summer, we hung out a lot playing games and going biking, or sometimes camping and more or less just enjoying being young and having time (two things that have disappeared since then). What I remember most from when he introduced me to Stars! was how we played games that might last 3-5 days, and playing 5-8 hours a day. He was much better than me, but I still was able to beat him on rare occasions. We played in my basement, which is open and unfinished, and contains my collects of old computers from the early to mid 2000s. We played our games on these old machines, even though I had a much better computer upstairs, and he usually brought his own modern laptop. We ate a lot of pizza and watched a lot of Netflix between our epic space battles, and constant barrage of mineral packets from annoying AIs. I remember constantly trying to leapfrog his tech, only to fall short, and have my freshly minted cruisers with my most modern weaponry obliterated by even his outdated ships. Sometimes I'd get the drop on him, and sweep the universe of any evidence of his existence. Often we'd play cooperative versus AI so one of us didn't end up remarkedly bitter after losing a 3 day game.
I guess what I want to say, is that Stars! reminds me of carefree days of a simpler time for me. It represents friendship, nostalgia, and fun. I suppose there aren't too many folks still playing Stars! and even I rarely do anymore, but I thought I'd share what Stars! means to me, with a community who knows what it's about. I hope that work on Stars! Nova continues and progresses well so that both new folks can learn to play the game and old folks can continue to enjoy it as well.
