I ran across a program a few days ago that I thought was very interesting: a program that backs up a file to paper. To restore, just scan the paper pages in any order or orientation at at least 900dpi and you'll get your file back.

http://www.ollydbg.de/Paperbak/index.html

I tested it on a 1.5mb pdf file. At the default 300dpi, 70%, 1:5 output in PaperBak.exe, this file printed on 3 pages on a laser printer. I then scanned the pages in random order/orientation into the program at 1200dpi and could see what blocks were error-correctable, etc. The file was successfully recovered due to the error correction inside each block, and due to the 1:5 redundancy of each block.

To me, this is an example of pure geekyness. The program is small, simple, does something very weird but useful, and just works.

Has anyone else found programs that you think fit into this kind of category?
