Game Parameters
I’m willing to modify the following parameters somewhat if at least half of the players want to, but this is more or less what I’m looking forward to:

Game version:
JRC3 or JRC4 registered version
.
Number of players: 4 minimum, hopefully 16. Game will start if there are at least 4 players two weeks from now. It will start earlier if all 16 show up. If there are any unfilled slots I’ll put some random/random AI’s in.
Host is playing: Yes. If you have questions, comments, etc you can PM me, or email me at richfactor <at> hotmail <dot> com
Played on Autohost:
Yes.
Ranked Game: Yes. Please include in your initial post here what your present rank is. If you don't have a rank, you can arbitrarily decide to be either Beginner or Lower Intermediate.
Player skill level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert—all skill levels.
Universe: Medium/Packed.
Player Positions: Distant.
Options: Public player scores, ABBS, galaxy clumping checked; no others checked.
Races: Any race. I'm also holding a vote further down the thread (post 16) on whether or not to restrict CA. If you would like to play you may want to vote there.
Player Relations: I’d like to see a game with lots of alliances. No pre-game alliances though.
Cheats: Split fleet dodge, chaff, and ISB trumps IT gate scanning allowed (ISB players can build any gates they like). No other cheats allowed. Blatant cheating will result in removal from game. Players are responsible for knowing the cheats and not using them.
Victory: “Owns 65% of planets” and “At least 80 years must pass before a winner is declared” are the only victory conditions set in game. Anyone who can do that is the winner, but otherwise, any unopposed alliance or single player can win the game after 2480.

Generation: One generation every 24 hours, faster if all the players submit. No turn regens and no delays unless at least half the players ask for one. I want to keep the game going pretty fast.
Inactives: Players will be set to inactive after they have missed two turns. If you’ve missed six turns I’ll start looking for a replacement.
Game Start: Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Please PM your races files to Micha by Monday so he can check them, and then I'll start the game on Tuesday.
Replacements/Dropouts: The reason I’m calling this game “Hardheads” is because I’m really hoping for players who want to stick it out. Ask yourself a question. Let’s say it’s 2420, 2430, and a nearby PP race smashes half your worlds with packets. Or maybe you launch a major attack with the your huge battle fleet, and in a single, devastating move it gets all blown up by a ship design you didn’t prepare for—or any of a number of other things. Are you willing to hold out? I’m interested in getting players who will keep fighting. As they say, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

I myself had to drop out of a game last year because of some personal issues—that’s not what I’m talking about. I’ve played numerous games of chess or checkers where my opponent simply stopped playing because I was winning. I’m really hoping for fairly tough “Hardheads” in this game who will keep playing even if their situation doesn’t look good. You can still make a difference in the game even if you don’t win personally. And amazing comebacks aren’t unheard of either. If you do find your race in a predicament, if you get hit with an early setback, if your fleet gets decimated, try looking for another way out, other than dropping out. For instance, look on Autohost, Stars! Faq and other places for tips on strategy, etc.

If you do need to drop out of the game though, please find a replacement if you possibly can. You can start a thread here and ask for a replacement. Along this line, make sure you put a password on your race file when you go to create your race, as well as on your turn files.

NOTE: Many players use the same password for all their files. In case you drop out, you may want to use a “throwaway” password for this game that you wouldn’t be afraid to give a replacement player. Just make sure you write it down.

Remember, even though your race might be on the brink of extinction, there are players out there who thrive on that sort of a challenge—resuscitating a dying race into a living, breathing, zombie, at the very least (well, maybe growling more than breathing—but you get the idea). Explain your race’s situation in your post, and maybe someone will want to take it over. If you can bring it back from the dead yourself, even better.

Files: Micha has agreed to be a third party for this game, to check the turn files for cheats and make sure all the race files have passwords. Please PM him with your .r files ahead of time and keep him updated in case you change your password. Once the game begins please also send him your .x files every year, and your .h files every five years, which should help in the event of dropouts.

Finally, craebild has offered to create a movie of the universe with Xtreme Borders after the game has ended. Micha is going to set up some attachment filters, so the process should be relatively painless. Smile

FOR NEW PLAYERS: The Autohost has information on submitting your turns and such here. Also, here's information straight from the Stars! help file on multiplayer games:

Quote:

Multi-player Games Only

(Optional) Before the host creates a game, use Stars! Custom Race wizard to create a customized race, then give the race file to the host.

Once the host creates the game, do the following on the machine where you'll play:

1. Obtain the gamename.xy and gamename.mN files, where gamename is the name entered by the host in the File Save dialog and N is your player
number; for example, nonstop.m1.
Hot Seat play these files will already be in the game directory shared by all players.
Network play -- just access the shared play directory (sharepoint) set up by the host.
Modem/Email play -- obtain these files from the host and place them in an arbitrary playing directory you've created on your own system.

2. Place your game files in the same directory each turn. The directory location is your choice--we recommend creating a play directory within the
Stars! directory to keep things simple.

3. Start Stars! and click on Open Game from the opening screen. Open your player file, gamename.mN.
Your game begins, with your home world displayed on the screen and in the Command, Scanner and Selection Summary panes. For the first turn,
the Message pane contains tips that help you get started. Investigate your home planet, start basic production and research, and send your
scouts out to learn about the nearby worlds.
If you've never played Stars! before, we recommend you play the tutorial game first to learn basic strategies and to familiarize yourself with all the
player tools.

4. Network/Hot Seat players -- Once you finish the turn, select the menu command Turn (Wait for New). Stars! will minimize, waiting for a new
turn. When the new turn is ready, it will beep once and flash, while displaying "Turn available".
Modem/Email players -- Select File (Save and Submit), then File (Exit). Or, if you're trading turns quickly or leave your computer on for long
periods of time, you can also use Turn (Wait for New)--a much simpler scenario.

All players -- If you wish, you can exit the game before or after you finish the turn. You can save your changes or start the turn again if you don't
like the way things are going. Read Exiting Stars! for more information.

5. If you are playing over a modem or email, upload or email only your log file, gamename.xN file to the host system.

6. If you plan to be absent for a turn or more, follow the instructions in Being Absent from Play.

Thanks all.

Time to find out who’s got the hardest head!
