Just a quick note that energy by turn 5 or 6 Kotk is referring to is assuming an ACC BBS start - I remember it took me a while to cotton on to that when I started playing Stars! - I was trying (and failing) to get 25K resources by 2450 with an normal start - playing an Hyper-Producer
By all means experiment with less than optimal race designs - they can be fun and informative to try, particularly when you start - just make sure you have something relatively solid by the time you get into a multi-player game. It would not be much fin to find out why expensive energy is bad in a game you've committed to playing for 3 months.
Also, with the 'i' patch you can't play on autohost - but you might find some duels or other games you can play in. I really hope that legal serial numbers become available again somehow.
