Hi!
With an emerge of a range 6 "chaff shredder" gattling weapons in the Verker's Stars! mod (Note from moderator: VML development stopped, website is down) I faced the problem how to conduct a cost-effective attack on a well defended planet.

With the recent development in the Transwarp III game I've successfully tested shielded chaff. With 8 Omega BBs and 500 FF chaff (FF, QJ-5, Xlaser, 2 wolverines) I've attacked fully armed Doom DS and about 60 Mega Disruptor/sapper unshielded! pocket BBs + 6 Upsilon pBBs losing only all chaff. Despite my BBs had only 2 jammers 20 and chaff had 168 shields they were tergeted by all missiles/torpedos first.

So where's the catch?

For chaff to work it needs to be attractive more than ships it is protecting. If you add shields, the attractiveness drops. What you can do to rise it again? First solution is to increase costs, but that goes against the very idea of chaff. The second possibility is to decrease amount of shields, but that beats idea od shielded chaff. The idea I used is to DECREASE THE ARMOR of the chaff.

Any lightbulb going on? Smile

Receipt for making highly-attractive shielded chaff

You need
- one ally, that builds
- 2 fast DDs with Alpha torpedos in separate fleets, and gives them "attack your armed ships only" order,
- 1 stargate at his planet,
- your shielded chaff in ONE fleet with "attack none/none, NOT
disengage" order.
You gate your chaff to the ally's planet where his DDs are waiting. When combat starts your chaff just waits at the battle board until round 16 and with the help of min 1/512 armor damage DDs strip it's armor down to 2% or 5%, maybe losing only few ships in the last couple of rounds. Now run the StarsCalc and check it's attractiveness with full shields and 1 or 2 points of armor Wink
In order to prevent self-repairing you have to gate it around each turn for 0% repair, or move it through space for 1% repair per turn. Use it on your opponents before it gets more than 5 points of armor.

Now, the final question. In order to use such shielded chaff it has not to be taken as abuse of the "min 1/512 armor damage". What's your opinion?
BR, Iztok
