I can never remember what happened in games, so this'll be more of a summary than a blow-by-blow account.
Let's see... decided to go for factoryless with 1-in-2 hab and grab as much as I could early on, seeing as it was a small crowded universe. Was banking on taking over a neighbour's territory early on and getting an early tech lead. Fortunately I was lucky with position and had virtually the whole of the south to myself after making a border agreement with the BFTs. Just as well as initial attempts to attack the Robots were... less than successful. Probably should have attacked them earlier, but as I had so much room to expand and they had so little territory it didn't seem worth it in the early stages. The BFTs would have been a better target, but wanted to keep that border agreement in place and rely on them to be a buffer between me and everyone else while I filled up the southern half of the galaxy.
Was considering going for an alliance with the BFTs, but as I had such a good position, and as they were tied up with the Plats and Conflags, was coming to the conclusion that I could go it alone (probably incorrectly heh). When Star Daze took over for the Seleni and inherited such a bad position I agreed to an alliance just so they could have some kind of shot at the game. In for a penny in for a pound, so I let them have a few planets and helped them out with tech with the hope that later in the game they would be able to return the favour, as indeed they did. Without their help the Conflags would have won at Harding. That would have been a big blow, so big thanks to Star Daze. 
First attempt at factoryless and I didn't play it well, but was very lucky in this game. Only player in the southern half of the galaxy. Alliances (or lack of) went well for me. The BFTs were on their own against everyone else. After the Robots dropped out, a pair from the BFTs, Plats, and Conflags really should have formed an alliance. Things might have been very different if that had happened. Was very aware of time ticking away and my factoryless state becoming more of a liability as the game progressed. But no one seemed inclined to put a stop to my expansion. Can't believe how much territory I managed to grab without anyone putting a stop to it! 37 planets at the end of the game but only 29k res.
