Never had time to keep up with times, really. Just went through my woefully undersized computer (148GB) and deleted 58 gigs of games I haven't played in long enough that I figure I won't again till I'm ready to reinstall it. My Asus has alright power,
Intel i5 dual core 2.27GHz
4GB RAM
Radeon HD 5470
Nothing especial but good enough for most games on or near minimum quality settings. This being said, can anyone recommend a game playable on a computer? That Banished looks pretty cool, but today I'm piqued by Star Wars (just finished Rebels show (not a word about kids cartoons!)).
I'm also interested in building my own computer to make this one look like a room full of magnetic tape and vacuum tubes. I've read that there are thousand dollar graphics cards and terabyte solid state drives on the market, but next year it'll be half that price with something better already available, so I'll probably stick to a total system @ $2000 (maybe less to start, with upgrade potential). Maybe Mac or Linux?
Would anybody have any suggestions on that, as well?

I don't remember if I ever posted about Event Horizon on here, but in case I didn't, EH is a simple 4X game developed by Nick Dumas (Suicide Junkie) and myself. You've got a hex grid of sectors from which you can mine resources, and your ships are constructed of only four components: Hull, Thrusters, Weapons, and Shields. I've got some screenshots and downloads here:
http://edkolis.exofire.net/eventhorizon.php
Well, Nick and I are working on a sequel!
Event Horizon 2 will be much more detailed than EH1, and we're starting out by building a hex-based ship designer and a turn-based tactical combat game, then building the strategic layer around it. We've got a mostly functional ship designer, and Nick said he'd be working on tactical combat this weekend. (Last I heard on Friday, he had combat mechanics working, but no GUI to issue commands.)
I've got some screenshots of the game linked at the bottom of the EH page I linked above, and Nick has some more on his site:
http://imagemodserver.dyndns.org/nick/GreenEggsAndHam/EH2/pi ctures/
I've also started work on a web GUI using Javascript, so eventually you could actually play directly from the website!

Watched the movie Secretariat the other day on Starz. Wow! That was an amazing horse. No other horse has come close to that performance in over 35 years.
Recorded a clip of the final race for the triple crown. Just wow!
Did a lot of video compression to make this small, for easier viewing, about 15Meg size, so quality is a little low in some parts.
How often do you get to see the end of the movie first?

I've been using the "Giveaway of the day" site for quite some time and some goodies pop up often.
Today's offer is a good one. Highly praised DVD Fab program, regular $50, free today, if you download it within about the next 16 hours from the time of this post, and register it before the time expires.
Important: if you don't register it within time limit stated on the page, you'll only have a time-limited demo installed, instead of a registered version. Registration instructions always come with the downloads in a text file.

I'm looking for 16 players for a game that is a poor man's version of Stars! Why play a poor man's version? Well, it is different and variety is the spice of life. It's been around in various forms for about 15 years, but it is a custom game with a very small player base.
It is free. There is a java based (and web distributed) front end, although most of the complex commands are still done via text commands, and it helps to have some general computer skills.
the URL is http://www.dickieville.com/Dave/mhgc.htm
Please contact me at dave@dickieville.com if interested!
Thanks,
Dave

A neat online hacking simulation, can play with/against other people, or form a clan.
If you register after using http://www.slavehack.com?id=autohost that link, I'll get some Support Points.

For those of you who dont know, a Nomic is a game where modifying the rules of the game is the primary activity of the game.
<blatant_plug>Nomicide is a Nomic run on Livejournal and new players are always welcome </blatant_plug>
For the curious, there's also a Nomic Wiki and Agora, a nomic that has been active for 14 years(and you thought Stars! games were long).

Here's a link to a site that has the following premise:
Quote: | Lord of the Rings is more or less the foundation of modern D&D. The latter rose from the former, although the two are now so estranged that to reunite them would be an act of savage madness. Imagine a gaggle of modern hack-n-slash roleplayers who had somehow never been exposed to the original Tolkien mythos, and then imagine taking those players and trying to introduce them to Tolkien via a D&D campaign.
|
The author, Shamus, uses vidcaps from the LotR movies to create comic strips of the gamers/NPC/etc. as they move through the campaign. Very funny. Check it out at:

Thousand Parsec is a vibrant free and open source project, creating a framework for 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate) space strategy games. We are happy to announce that this year we are also participating in Google Summer of Code as a mentoring organisation. We have prepared a special page with information and ideas for students, who would like to work on a task for Thousand Parsec. Join us, it will be fun, you'll gain a new experience, learn something new, play games and if you finish successfully you can even get 4500$. The deadline for submissions of student applications is 24th of March.

Hope it's not inapporiate to mention this release here, I was suggested also posting here from the FreeStars! section. I thought with all you being fans of Stars! it would intrest you.
After a massive amount of work, Thousand Parsec is proud to announce that the next version (0.2.0) of its primary client is now available.
There have been massive changes to the client's back end code and quite a few UI improvements. Some off the highlights are:
- Request Pipelineing. Faster downloads on fast connections and on connections with high ping times.
- Automatic Media Downloading. The client will now download the required media of the web.
- Animated Planet Graphics. There are now cool animated planet graphics and other graphics displayed in the information screen.
- Account Creation Support. You can now create an account on servers straight from the client.
- Design Support. You can now create ships, torpedoes or any other object that the server supports. Properties and requirements of designs are calculated locally using a Scheme based language called tpcl.
- Message Reference Support. Servers can now say that messages refer to certain objects and the GOTO button will take you to them.
- Better Caching. Better support for universe caching and only downloading what has changed.
This release also includes binaries for windows and binaries for Mac OS X ( http://www.thousandparsec.net/tp/downloads.php#tpclient-pywx ). The binaries have the following requirements:
Windows
- Windows 98 or greater
- 50mb disk space
- 1024x768 screen or greater
Mac OS X
- Mac OS X 10.3.8 or higher, 10.4.1 or higher is preferred
- 200mb disk space
- 1024x768 screen or greater
There are also two permanent demonstration servers. The servers have the following properties:
demo1.thousandparsec.net
- 5 minute turns
- Restarted every day
- MiniSec rule set
demo2.thousandparsec.net
- 6 hour turns
- Restarted when somebody takes over 80% of the universe
- Partial MTSec rule set
Hope you all enjoy the
