Should the Hacked .exe be released?[ 14 votes ]
1. Yes to everybody 2 / 14%
2. No!!!! 4 / 29%
3. Only to trusted people 7 / 50%
4. Other 1 / 7%

I have had a request for the hacked version of the stars executable. I've heared that such .exes are already in the wild.

Advantages of a release is that hosts can create/examine races without the need of the password.

Disadvantages are that it could possibly be abused by unscrupulous hosts.

I have had a request for the hacked version of the stars executable.

The question is what hack. If player's password, then I'd wote "NO!!!". The community already had problems with cheating hosts. But other "hacks" you've discovered (PRT costs, terra costs, instaforming) would help modding the game, and for those I'd vote "Yes to everybody".

Yes, I was referring to the password hack - since AH already has password protection and being able to open racefiles etc. w/o password can be useful for hosts.

Hacked password exe... what stops everyone from downloading other peoples .x files and reading their position?

...

Not the original request, but I have wondered for a while why we complain about CA being too strong, certain other races like PP being too weak, etc.

The fix seems obvious, we all switch to a hacked version (by pirate lord tools) that balances much of the situation. Main challenge would be to agree on what is 'balanced'.

Throw the CA race design cost up, the cost of orbital adjusters up, the cost of terraforming bombs down and CA makes more sense. Give PP more points to play with so it can compete. Other races can be tweaked, for example SS could get more points for NAS (no advanced scanners) and JOAT less.

I personally think stargates are overpowered and ruin much of the tactical potential of the game. If it were me I would try to reduce their range and increase the cost, so that people would have to plan in advance more and logisitics would be more important. Right now you can easily flip most of your fleet to any location with a decent easy to build gate within 2 years.

Only thing is to password protect the .x and .m files. Or add a layer of encryption. Preventing download is the easiest. SAH has implemented that for .m file download. Not sure about .x file though.

This is precisely what I'm doing in my Wammalammadingdong Mod (see VML forum).

I agree absolutely. I will also change this and reduce power of the fuel mizer to make manoeveur more important. Will also alter mines to prevent chaff sweeping. (SD race will be modified to balance).

Sadly, I've not had time to work on it and would rather release the finished mod rather than a half-baked one.

Makes ISB nicer too.

Consider reducing the fuel capacities for capital ships (BB, DN) and bombers, as well.

Chaff sweeping is a problem?

SD is a wee bit too strong as it is. If you're going to change anything with mines, remove the 512 field limit and boost the point cost of SD to around where SS is.

If you remove chaff sweeping, maybe you could add in remote detonation of heavy, or even speed bump mines (freezing everything inside)? Just a thought, may be too unbalanced. Smile

I intend to remove remote detonation for SD (in fact, SD will probably end up looking like a different PRT). I've not looked at what causes the 512 field limit, but I suspect it would be something that could require a major rewrite to fix.
