Playing two races - is it cheating?[ 35 votes ]
1. Playing two races is always cheating! 2 / 6%
2. Playing two races is only okay as a temporary fill in. 19 / 54%
3. Playing two races is fine providing everyone knows about it. 14 / 40%
4. Playing two races is okay under any circumstance. 0 / 0%
5. I often play two races and no one has caught me yet!!! 0 / 0%
6. Playing two races is fine provided I do it on separate computers. 0 / 0%

There's a situation in a current game whereby one race is dropping out and another race within that game is maybe taking over, thereby playing two races.

Now I want to be clear that this isn't a temporary situation where he's just filling in for a friend/ally. The race concerned has been offered permanent ownership of the second race.

Do people think this is cheating as an absolute or might there be room for compromise given that the game has already started and we would all know whom is playing what race?

Rather than just checking the box I'd also like to hear peoples opinions on this.

IMO you should ask other players if they agree. If only one objects, the takeover shouldn't happen.

I think it depends mainly on the circumstances. For me, it is okay if one race is really small and has no chance to win any more. Otherwise, controlling two races means having an unbreakable alliance, and that's not fair towards the others.
Of course, if it is a team game it is okay, and there may be situations in the end game where one player plays two allied races. But in normal circumstances, I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Rolling Eyes
I think that a player could play a second race in a game temporarily only.

In this case, with the taking over player playing a small race, it really doesn't make sense. Playing two races always leads to advantages.

That about sums it up for me as well.

If 2 races were already in an unbreakable alliance (i.e. sharing game and upload passwords), I would consider it fair to let a player play both races should one half of the alliance not wish to go on.
However, playing 2 races at least doubles the MM and time taken to play. If this happens to me, I generally look for a replacement rather than continue to play the other race for an extended period of time.

IMO, playing 2 races that aren't fully allied is only ok on a very temporary basis and must be made known to the host, if not the rest of the players. If they are uninformed, then diplomacy becomes a big problem.

IOW, avoid if possible, but make sure everyone knows the score if unavoidable.

Please note, this topic is not intended to slander anyone. Race concerned has updated their last communication and specified that they requested the new race playing his turn to find a more permanent replacement.

This subject is purely designed for the purposes of clarity and to obtain opinions from the general Stars community - nothing more Smile

... Playing two races always leads to advantages.

Scanning, xfer ships/minerals, leave 100 pop to defend a fully built up planet, etc. Even if it's a partnership game and the other player was your ally; it reduces coordination time and differences of opinion on which race gets the minerals, where to attack, etc.

Even if the other race is almost dead and does have no PRT or LRT specific bonuses for you it is cool to have it for 1024 fleets or 32 ship designs limit. Wink

If others in game do not object then i think it is fair.

Do not think you can get 32 different designs, you need at least 1 slot with original race for building and transferring.

Hey! I have my 2 cents !

I think, as a rule, that it should be limited to a temporary fill-in situation.

However!

If, as has been pointed out, an ally has to drop out of a game and a replacement can not be found after a reasonable period of time, say a week, then it should be fine for the other to take over so long as the other players know and agree.

I would not be real happy if I found out that one player has taken to playing two races without my knowledge. Just feels like an attempt to cheat, whether it actually helps out or not. The two players should not simply decide to pool their resources without the knowledge being broadcast to the others in the game. That's just wrong.

In my opinion.

Did you really think anybody would pick #5? Even if I agreed with #5, which I don't, I doubt that I would admit to it.

We will not mention what I would do should a player submit more than one race to a game using pseudonyms and alternate email addresses.Arguing 3

Good point you made there Crusader, but I usually get a surprise or two from poll results. In a previous poll of mine entitled "What to do" it was worded as follows:

"Let's suppose that you're a player in a Stars game and you decide to check whether everyone has passworded their race.
If you then found an unpassworded race what would you do?"

One of the possible answers was number eleven:

"11. Snicker as you gleefully take in as much as you can about the race."

Two respondants out of thirty chose that answer and let me tell you, it was a big shock that anyone would be cheeky enough to say so. For this reason I always give players the choice between widely varied options. I'm always interested to see if someone will take the bait Smile
