Aren't these things great for taking advantage of superior range weapons? I was thinking: if a ship were overloaded with overthrusters so that it had movement 2.5 but with two extra overthrusters added anyway (so without the battle movement limitation, battle speed would be 3.5), would the energy dampener reduce the speed to 1.5, or would the extra overthrusters keep it at 2.5?

Dunno, good question. Why doncha try it in a testbed, lazy! Twisted Evil

Sheesh, finally found someone as lazy as me! Laughing

Oh, just on the off-chance that you're not actually as lazy as me, would you be good enough to post the results of your experiment here so I can continue being lazy? Very Happy

I'M NOT AN EXPERT AND I'M OFTEN PROVEN WRONG. TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU READ MY POSTS.

I would say it reduces the speed to 1.5, but never tested it ...
Slightly related: the WM +0.5 gets added first and than the ED reduces the speed. That means that a WM ship with movement of 2 gets +0.5 so 2.5 in total and when it gets into battle it becomes 1.5, no difference here in what comes first but if you design a 2.5 WM ship that means the +0.5 is lost (can't have 3) and than it gets reduced to 1.5 just the same ... Well I think that also answers your OT question too Grin (anyone noticed the new "Grin"!!)

mch

I will confirm that the max BS with ED present is 1.5 and that's no matter what.

I would confirm your confirmation if I weren't afraid that I would make zoid's life too easy so I will not confirm your confirmation; but if I were to confirm your confirmation then I would do so gladly as you are so correct.

That would be if I were to do so, which I am not so inclined to do.

Oh well. It ain't all about zoid. Cheers

Once played SD and opponent made the mistake of coming at me with a shiny new fleet of beamer BBs. Oh, he had me well beat in weapons tech, but simply had NO missile components in his attack fleet. A stack of missile BBs with a single Energy Dampener ship (either scout or frigate - I forget which) made a real mess of his superior fleet, as they tried so hard to fight their way through a vacuum suddenly as thick as molasses. It was a whole lot of fun! (For me!) Yey

IIRC, the simple rule of thumb was, all else being equal, if you have more chaff then you don't need the ED; but if they have more chaff then you better bring one along. All because it hurts the shorter-range beamers so much more, thus making the longer-ranged missile boats even more deadly. See? But, with you being SD, your opponents really do want and NEED those beamer ships, so they can quickly reduce your mine fields. It kinda gets your enemies in a Catch-22 situation, and forces them to fight with the "combined-arms" concept, but they never know if you are going to bring along that nasty little ED. Twisted Evil

So, first they build a lot of beamers to take down your mine fields. Things start out well. Then they meet your missile boats with ED. Oh, MAN! Gotta build more missle boats, but still gotta have the beamers. Whew! Getting expensive fighting these guys. Build goodly balanced combined arms fleet. What?! He left off the ED, used fast gatling beamers. Toasted!! Wall Bash

SD is good!

Nothing for now.

No effect, 1 or more dampeners reduces everyone's speed by 1, so it's best to just stick one on a ff or scout and then bring it to the battle or not.

SD is good!

I am sooo happy not to be alone with my opinion...

I seriously believe SD is most fun and if you know how to play the most dangerous PRT...
(SS could be more fun, but is not powerful enough IMHO, or at least to expensive in the race-wizard).

Anyway... just a no content post to convince planyers to try SD some more Very Happy

I mod the hulls of mini mine layer and super mine layer into versatile ships(with Star Ed ofcourse). And then Build big Standard minefields and keep them detonating. While I have various classes of ships ranging from colonizers to cargo ships and destroyers to mini dreadnoughts all based on mine layer ships.

and if the battleship is 91% cloaked and bit better than normal Battleship then...

I sure like SD Surprised
