If your WP-0 dropped troops successfully conquere the planet, your own bombers won't bomb your own troops. Ownership of the planet changes rightaway in 3.B), see order of events.

Correct.
It's good to have at least 1 freighter always in space but in range for WP-1-pop-drop.
If bombing takes longer than expected I usually move out 1 freighter from orbit each year... and 1 in.

But my point/question is it looks like troops at WP0 drop _before_ bombing, which means you need a heck of a lot more troops that way, because the planetary population is still there.
That means if your plan is to invade, the troops MUST be not in orbit at the beginning of the turn, so they can arrive as WP1, post bombing.
It should be noted that you'll only get tech if there's people there when you popdrop. Popdropping a world that's blasted clean only saves you the colonisation module.
(As an aside, if bombing is taking more than one turn, you might want to invest in the various ways of speeding it up. The two-player trick is the cheapest, but packets and cherryspam aren't *that* bad. A fleet which can kill a world a turn is much more dangerous than one which has to sit on a world for three or four.)

The trick really is getting the fleet composition right. Not just bombers, but minelayers along for interdiction, freighters to haul minerals away from where you don't want to live, a colony ship or two for those places you mistakenly bomb out of existence when you don't want to, pop to capture the places you want, enough fuel for extended maneuvering, ships for chaff sweeping, ships for mine sweeping, as well as the appropriate mix of bombers (do I want to capture the planet, or erase the planet). A mainline of minerals behind them to packet things along the way also helps. Strip off the defenses, kill the pop with packets, and then pop drop or colonize to scoop the minerals back up.
