Well then, I'm an idiot. Or half of one at least. Consider the direct opposite of what I said. In the hands of an expert, SD might be inherently too good to cripple with bad racials, perhaps for similar reasons to what I described. Perhaps also I should stop talking, since I clearly don't know what I'm talking about.

Keep calm and carry on!

Beginners are allowed to play SD. It's the experienced players who are prohibited from doing so.

Maybe it would be too much to expect a beginner to navigate well-managed SD minefields.

Also, SD starts with more RW points than most races, so given that beginners will find it tough to deal with minefields, and that SD has more points, that would be a pretty big advantage. If you do not mind the extra MM, it is a pretty powerful race.

Old Stars! gurus have written sth. along the lines of "to successfully fight a good SD player one needs about twice his economy." I'd add to that also "... or up to twice the MM he's doing".

Banning SD race for experienced players is IMO a very good decision.

I do know that computer players with minefields are a massive pain. Despite the fact that it's easy to park a small mine-destroying fleet somewhere and limit the size of said minefield (I imagine that won't work against someone who sends out his own fleets against the mine-destroyers).

SD is significantly worse than that. They have an ability generally termed "lay on arrival", i.e. their minelayers can lay mines after moving (at half normal capacity). This means they can have mobile (and potent, because of SD's higher-power mine-laying parts) minelayers laying e.g. 260 standard/200 heavy mines (radius 16/14) in a different place each year in your space to disrupt your shipping. Try to catch them with your own ships, setting them to warp 9? Whoops, the minelayer ducked into an earlier-laid minefield and you crashed into the heavy mines, obliterating your fleet (those things do 5x the damage of normal mines). Try to sweep the mines with cheap gatling frigates? Whoops, the standard mines exploded (SD can do that), automatically killing your ships before they could sweep. Let's not even start on the cloaked minelayers (which the Super Mine Layer hull can achieve) and the Energy Dampener mindgames.

A competently-played SD requires even greater competence to oppose meaningfully; it makes perfect sense to ban competent SDs from a beginner game.

Altruist (or someone who can get in touch with him)- What do you think the schedule looks like now? This series of games has been valuable to a lot of players -- a great way to get back into Stars. I played in one a number of years ago and had lots of fun, then played another game... (Then had kids, full stop.)

If you're too busy to start game #10 right now, I totally get it. When do you think you'll have enough time to comfortably do race feedback and game setup? 3 months? 6, or 12?

If there are enough people for a game, I'm good with starting up one. Can't Stop is in the final stages, and I don't mind ref'ing again.

Let me know if there's interest, and I'll get the process going. -v

I'd love to, Victor, I was SUPER excited about FA10. But Once More is going now, with most of the original signups from this game in it. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, I can't do two games. I'm hoping for a Fledgling Admirals AFTER Once More.

Keep calm and carry on!

I suppose I have to consider that this one is dead on arrival. So, yeah, I'd be interested in another game starting up, if there are enough people free and wanting to play.

Pretty sure Victor knows about OMITB, since he's playing in it. Laughing

OMITB will probably run for the rest of 2020 and a bit of 2021, although quite a few people are likely to get eliminated before that.

If it were me, I'd wait a bit before starting a new game so I could pick up at least a few of those in addition to those who didn't join OMITB. But waiting until OMITB is over isn't entirely necessary.
