Hi,

I have updated StarsWine to use a new engine called 'otvdm'. Download StarsWine here:

https://github.com/stars-4x/starswine/releases

This new release brings some excellent changes:

* Much better integration with Windows 64-bit, if not seamless
* Only 3 MB download!
* None of the bugs from the previous release

But if you should find a bug, please let me know and I'll see if I can't fix it or kick it upstream.

For the curious, otvdm is the 16-bit WINE layer ported natively to Windows 64-bit and is being developed here:

https://github.com/otya128/winevdm

Enjoy!

Note one bug: if it fails to run (missing a DLL or funny 0xc000007b error), you'll need to install VS C++ runtime 2017 (32 bit) found here:

https://aka.ms/vs/15/release/vc_redist.x86.exe

I am working on removing this requirement.

I have removed the requirement for installing the MSVC runtime libraries in the latest release. However, the download is now 2 MB larger! Smile

I see at least a dozen people have downloaded this. Are people actually using StarsWine?

For those who tried it and may have decided against, what were some of the issues?

I've used it a few times, and it starts up faster than then my StarsDOSBox setup. Unfortunately, I usually forget I have StarsWine setup and use StarsDOSBox instead.
I've added StarsWine to the Wiki on the https://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Stars_vs_OS

Today I've tried the StarsWine for the first time.

WHOW!
Now that's great stuff and highly superiour to any other thing we had so far for Win 7 64-bit.
And as easy as even me getting it done within 2min.

Thanks a lot, raptor!

Does it also work for Win 10?

You're welcome!

Yes, tested on every Windows 64-bit since Windows 7.

Does this just allow windows users to use Stars! in the same fashion as Linux uses? I just can't imagine anyone using DOSbox to play the game. How claustrophobic.

I've used the Windows 7 Virtual PC, and VirtualBox. Both of which I prefer over DosBox. Glad StarsWine is improved.

@Raptor huge thanks for your work on this. Great to have tools that allow continued play of this classic on newer systems.

I found that running stars.bat works fine on Win 10 but when trying it on a 64-bit Win 7 pro machine I get the following error:
Quote:
Could not load 'KERNEL.DLL' required by 'dummydll', error=2

Upon clicking "OK", another error displays:
Quote:
otvdm.exe has stopped working

I've tried running as administrator but get the same result.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks
Mr K

Hi Mr K,

It sounds like something is wrong with the file layout in the starswine4 folder. Either extraction of the ZIP didn't work quite right or some files went missing accidentally.

I know that it has run on Windows 7 without issue, but it could be an incompatibility with your specific system for some reason. For this reason, I attempted a new build that modified some compiler things to increase compatibility. It's found here (for now):

https://www.et.byu.edu/~buckd/starswine5alpha.zip

md5sum:
5673a8be3da0b43fd71fa266ba95a321 starswine5alpha.zip

I don't know if it'll work, it's a shot in the dark. Please let me know if it does.

Hi Raptor,

Your 'shot in the dark' is a bulls-eye. That version works perfectly on my 64-bit Win 7 pro machine.

I've also checked it on my Win 10 machine and it works there too.

Thank you!!

Hah, that's great! I admit I still don't know what the issue is, but I posted that build publicly here now (and renamed it):

https://github.com/stars-4x/starswine/releases

I'll include the compiler changes in future builds (if any).

I just installed StarsWine.

A hopefully little problem: in the battle VCR I do not see ship quantities, and the VCR is smaller than it was when running it on my old VM. Is this a StarsWine problem or something else?

Win 10 Pro. HP Laptop with extra monitor. This occurs if on the laptop screen or the second screen. I have tried with the Stars! setting for small, medium, and large screens, and all the same. Not sure this is a Starswine problem. Could this be a problem I can fix in the .ini file? Just not sure where to start on this one. Let me know if there is anything I should try (including things to prove it is not a Starswine problem).

It could very likely be a StarsWine problem - there is another build on the releases page that says it's for Windows 7, it actually has a slightly newer StarsWine engine compiled in and may work differently. Could you please try that one?

No change to the battle VCR. It did lose all my setups again (but those are still there with the previous Starswine). Where does it keep the ini file?

The stars.ini is located in the otvdm\windows sub-directory

A note to users experience problems with their serial: StarsWine may appear to not save the serial when you start.

This is because the serial is on a list of banned serial numbers and should be avoided.

This is not a StarsWine issue but rather one built into Stars! 2.6jrc4. For more info, please see this issue here:
