On Thursday I upgraded to ubuntu 18.04 and now the stars! client is slow. Many thinks are still fast as always, but clicking on a 'fleet has completed orders' message, or merging/splitting fleets, takes 2-3 seconds with one CPU core running at 100%

Did anyone have the same experience, and did they get it fixed?

Thanks!

What version of WINE is it? (e.g.: 'wine --version' at command prompt)

At first it was 3.0, now I used the repository from wine itself and have 4.0:

$ wine --version
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libgtk3-nocsd.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.
wine-4.0
$ wine64 --version
wine-4.0

I used the stable version, I guess I could try with the development version...

So.. it seems no longer slow, after doing a number of occult rituals and multiple offerings to the RNG.

I think that I did something like:
- installed the wine apt source
- installed wine-stable and wine64-stable (both 4.0 as reported above)
- rebooted
- purged wine
- reinstalled wine64-develop (which somehow ended up being 3.6)

What did we learn? Good question Smile. But I can play again!

I'm curious what your current version is. Mine is wine-3.7.

So I thought this was mostly solved, but the problem kept getting back unpredictably. It was always related to fleets, either merging them or finding them (by clicking "goto" in the message pane) gave a delay of 3 - 20 seconds (!), but other actions such as "goto" on a planet message were fine.

A workaround that seems to solve/reset the problem was to go to fleet report (f3 -> f3, this incurs the delay), sort on a column, and click on a ship there. After that, it responds again as normal.

[why? no clue Smile. Maybe sorting the fleets causes it to use a different search function, but why searching through <512 fleets on a modern computer can ever take 20 seconds is anyone's guess]

The answer is probably going to be some variation of "the hardware is being used in a highly-inefficient manner" (this tends to be the case with indie games made with high-level tools, and is always the case with emulators; while Wine is not strictly an emulator I can believe that it wouldn't be as efficient as native code).

I mean, when I run Stars through DOSbox I have to wait for a second or so for the graphics to update every time I give an order or select something. I wish I could run Wine on Windows without having to use a Linux (virtual) box in-between (which was actually my previous Stars setup, but the d###ed thing decided to go kernel-panic on me for no reason).

Hi,

Does this same thing happen if you run StarsBox in Linux? I just added linux scripts and config file here:

https://github.com/stars-4x/starsbox

It assumes that you have dosbox installed on your Linux system.

It was mrvan; I guess I pressed the wrong 'reply' button.

I'd hate to see the day WINE on Linux fails to work with stars reliably, so I'm wondering how Stars! under DOSBox on Linux may fare with his heavy-use case.

I'm still hoping that this project (or similar) gets better with Stars! (my attempt was with the 'starswine' project): http://www.boxedwine.org/

Guys, you gotta check out the latest release of StarsWine I just pushed:

https://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=5 622

I just barely found a new project that natively ports WINE's 16-bit layer to Windows 64-bit and rolled it into StarsWine. It works quite well... and by that I mean it's vastly superior to all other solutions (so far).

Well as far as I can tell wine is functioning fine. No idea where the slowdown comes from, but really happy that my workaround is pretty reliable so far...

PS I think your StarsWine is not aimed at linux users, right?

No, it isn't. It's for Windows 64 bit users. Most Linux users here tend to be Linux VM on top of Win64 users. I wasn't entirely sure which you were.

Microsoft free for >10 years Smile

[actually, that's not quite true: I use Visual Code for ES6 projects, and I suppose Skype and Github are also MS nowadays...]
