I am contemplating joining this game if its not yet started. Should I expect about a one year game?

My experience would best be classified as returning veteran. I haven't played in about 6-7 years (I'll have to figure out how to get DOSBOX to work again), but I have played in one multi-human game before (which I won as a -AS JOAT). I also was one of the BETA testers on Stars Supernova and won the OCTOPUSH trial game (alongside some potential publishers). I kinda cheated there...by being the universe designer and victory condition setter. I had time to determine the best approach. I gotta admit to some serious disappointment when Supernova died - OCTOPUSH was fun. We had an eight armed spiral galaxy with each of our HW's at the end of our arm (eight players). You received one point per game year that you controlled a colony on the planet at the center of the map.

So I'll throw my hat into the ring here. I'll take the next few days re-learning how to move files about in DOSBOX and refreshing my race design knowledge. If you're looking to balance the universe based on already submitted races, you can just tell me what race type you think I should be and I'll design it. Its been long enough since I played that I really have no preference at this point.

No we haven't started yet Hitch, so you're good to go. I think we've got enough new and old players to make this very interesting. To be specific, each section of the univers within 200ly of a player's homeworld will be balanced to their habitat. Unless you have a ridiculous hab (or are IT), you should expect at least one good quality green nearby.

So far it looks like we have 8 definites:

Ringo
Raindancer
Abbadon
JScoble
Ludek
bretter
Awelty
Bob

And four maybes

TalkingBologna
Craebild
mrvan
Mac

Go ahead and spend some time playing with your files if you want. Please have them emailed to me by end of September. If the maybes turn to yes's, then I'll add a few days for people to do updates. Currently the deadline is the First of October!

Very interesting question. I never really thought about it in that way. Based on the turn generation timing, the game will go 229 days, not counting breaks, if the game goes to 100 turns. When I played a lot, most games would end by turn 100. So probably 8 months, unless the game is well balanced and goes longer, then I could see it taking a lot longer. If it goes another 40 turns that is 5 months more...

Generally everyone designs their race in secret, so there is no way to know what to build for balance. And if some people know what other races were in the game... they might build races to counter those.

I have played just about everything. So I may have a friend design the race for me, just so I get a surprise. Smile

Sorry, could not help continue this offtopic. once we had an experience of playing a game for 4 people in which everybody created a race for an opponent. With only limitation - amount of points left. That was fun.

Sorry, but real life is getting in the way. I won't start a game I can't commit the time to (yet), so I'll look for the next start up.

Hi!
With 40 planets per player this will be a long-lasting game. Be ready for spending 2 hours per turn around 2470, 3+ hours in the end-game.

My I also suggest Public player scores after turn 100? If that would reveal too much info, then maybe after 2450 game host could start giving each 5th turn some general info about players' progress, like "Leading player owns 34 planets, and the second one 26". This would help other players establish their relative positions in the game.

BR, Iztok

Do you still have the beta files to stars supernova? And is it playable?

I tend to not throw anything out, so I expect I still have it somewhere. And yes, it was 'playable' for most definitions of the term. It was in Beta still, so some features where not functioning as designed and I think there was something...that I can't quite remember...that wasn't coded at all yet. But it was playable and stable enough that we played about three weeks and did get to a point where a 'winner' was announced on the public forum.

Cool. If you find it, could I have it? I'd like to try it out, to see what could have been.
Maybe we should move this discussion to the Bar though.

I'll take a look but it was distributed via disc and I'll have to find the original. I think I'd also need to get authorization from Jeff M. before I'd feel comfortable distributing it anywhere.

With Comms allowed, I haven't seen a need for PPS, so we'll skip that change.

I'm afraid I won't make it Sad. FA9 is still going strong, and I'm too busy at work to be doing more than one at a time...

Good shooting!

I've got the files in from the Definite players, checking and looking at universe options this weekend. If anyone from Admirals changes their mind and wants to join, just get me a file by Monday and you should be good.

FYI the universe process takes a little while. Expect the game to start within 10 days. For details on exactly what process I use, check out https://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=5 547&start=0&rid=612

I'm going to use Craebild's calculator for planet hab expectations. http://craebild.dk/hab_range_tool/habcalc.html

So... it seems that FA9 is over.

Is there any chance of giving me a couple more days to send in my race file? I have a race ready, but I'd love to give it at least one more testbed with the conditions in this game.

(if not, I guess I'll just submit that race tonight and we'll see whether it flies Smile )

I would love to play, also, since the other game is over, but have nothing in the hole. I could resubmit the Cops Very Happy, they were an excellent race, but Wouter would have an unfair advantage against me. That being said, I would need more than just a couple days, maybe a week. Through a weekend I could get er done.

Josh

Edit: The Cops were an excellent race, and I owe much of my success to Altruist's suggestions. Thank you Altruist.

I'm going to say yes to waiting for files. I'll dedicate my Sunday to universe building in order to stay on schedule. Please have the files to me by Saturday bright latest.

Also for other players, feel free to update your files and resend them if you so desire. I'm dedicated to a successful launch and a good game.

Victor.

All the races are in, and we have a full board of 11 players! I consider it an honor that you let me referee you all, and I'm currently doing my globular best to make a good universe for all.

Having done this a time or four, the one thing I can guarantee is that I have no idea what's going to happen when I let you crazy sons of mothers loose on this universe. But I do very much hope you'll have fun.

Submissions are closed, universe building is going on full speed, and I my goal is to have it ready Wednesday evening latest. I'll send an email presently with a rule reminder, and updates Wednesday via email as well.

Ever Onward,

Victor.

Excellent, thanks for taking the time to set this up and host it! 11 players sounds like it will be a lot of fun, I'm sure we can all expect a nice and slow buildup phase *grin*

We should expect around 4x11=440 planets, right? Can you say how large the universe will be?

cheers,
"the Dutch vintner"

Hi

Times ago I was participating in a game in which player positions were adjusted.
I remember we were using a tool in which it was mandatory to send every ship to the homeworld on the 1st move.

Is it still the case with tools that are used here? Or shall we all go to full scout starting from Y2400?

Regards

In answer to both of your questions, there isn't a setting that gives you 440 planets https://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Density so the universe will have 512.

Part of why my setups take so long is that I'm continually trying to make the starting positions more equal across the board. According to my players, I'm not perfect yet, but getting there.

The player positions are moved, then the planets are scouted and moved so that what you can expect within 81 and 162 light years corresponds fairly closely to your hab range according to http://craebild.dk/hab_range_tool/habcalc.html.

For instance, if your hab is 0.55g - 8g, -200ºC, 80ºC, 31mR - 69mR the calculator shows about a 1 in 5 for you. Expect 1 green within 81ly and 4-5 within 21ly. I'm not going to adjust for yellows.

As for the scouts, they will all appear at your HW on the first turn.
