I am thinking about starting a team game.

Typically it is a two person team (though I have played in one that was three per team). The teams are decided before the game starts. Most often people like to pick their team mate rather than get one randomly. Random tends to be more fair, but picked tends to be more fun...

The team designs their races together.

When the game is set up the game is genned until the teams all start together (or someone had a tool to move HWs...).

Typically this game is no-comm with other teams.

The biggest down side of this game is actually time spend in communication. Players spend more time communicating with their team mate than they do playing their turn.

You have two results to look at not just one. Some people thinks this is an up side, some a down side.

So any thoughts on having a team game?

Teams of 3 make the no-comms restriction substantially less of an issue (the issue, of course, being runaways).

Most teams in team games tend to look very similar because there are a few PRTs that are extremely powerful in teams. CA and AR are perennial favourites thanks to Orbital Adjusters and the mineral fountain. IT (for mobility, and because they can intersettle very quickly) and WM (to build and use warships when fed minerals/tech) are another couple of good ones. Not much else can really compete, although IS, SS and SD are at least moderately interesting due to their toys. Whether you want to accept that or try to mitigate it is up to you, but I feel it needs to at least be recognised.

Not necessarily. It depends on your teammate. If you are on the same page as your teammate, then communication doesn't take that long. You learn your teammates schedule so you know when to expect replies to emails. I found communication in team games far easier than regular games when large alliances form.

This is important. I played and hosted some of the Dynamic Duos series of team games. In those we banned CA and IT to take away the obvious PRTs to use in a team game in an attempt to get a good mix of PRTs. We saw every other PRT except PP. We saw SS the least, probably because of the popularity of IS in these team games. HE the 2nd least. All the others were popular in these games. So really most of the games had IS, Joat, AR, SD, and WM in teams. Only half of the PRTs due to 2 being banned and the other 3 not desirable. I would think of a handicap system to encourage the use of the other PRTs and maybe allow IT with a big handicap for your new game idea.

I think this is necessary. If the teams can communicate, then we are back to the large alliances forming.

I will volunteer to setup and host if no one else wants to. Take a look at some of the other games I have run and decide what kind of options you want per setup/rules/restrictions.
