Remember the good old days of blitz games? I do...and I miss 'em.

An idea for a semi-blitz type game:

Game starts on a Saturday at 0:00 and gens every hour until Sunday 23:00.
That's at least 1 turn per hour for 48 hours. The first turns will likely go much faster than that since there's not much to do.

Teams of 2 players. Each team plays only one race. Ideally, each team has one member in the western hemisphere and one in the east, so that they can work in shifts, but I guess a same-hemisphere team could work if one player is on a graveyard shift schedule anyway. Smile

We could shift/shrink the exact window to suit the players (I'm GMT -5; I wouldn't mind ending as late as Monday 04:00.).

In 2-3 weekends, the game should be finished. Doesn't have to be 3 consecutive weekends. Players can decide which weekends they'll play. Maybe every other weekend, every third, whatever.

Another option would be to play only a 24 hour window each weekend. Takes twice the calendar time, but probably increases the potential player pool.

Thoughts?

Why not just blitz? Ten minute turns, start on a Saturday morning, finish Saturday afternoon.

I might be interested in the blitz option as well.



I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

While ten minutes is plenty of time for the first ten turns or so, as the game progresses into the late-early stages such a short turnaround time removes almost all of the tactical nuance from the game. The game devolves to a pure econ battle. Main-fleet clashes entirely decide the outcome between races.

I'm hoping to get the best of both worlds: a game that doesn't take 9 months to complete but that still offers opportunities for tactical nuance.

Which is not to say that I wouldn't sign up for a 10-min blitz game if someone offered it up, schedule permitting.

You can mix normal day gens and weekend blitz.
For egsample: From Monday to Friday 2 gens daily(12hrs) - with shifts of 2 players handling one race it should be doable.
Weekends....lots more - one per hour? It still gives some time to do the turns and hasten things while giving some time to communicate with 2nd player - more like blitz at weekends, remorseless in other days.

That is a possibility.

Adding the weekday gens might reduce the potential player pool. I imagine that some people would be willing to play like mad on the weekends but can't commit to playing a turn every weeknight as well.

What about the other way around? Gen 1/hour for perhaps a 6-hour window every weekday, then have the weekends off? Though it's probably harder to find a decent weekday playing window that our globally distributed player pool can commit to. By the time I'm home from work and have the kids in bed, it's the middle of the night for most of you. Smile
