I was thinking of getting back into the game. Its been a couple of years. I had a falling out when a player Broke a NAP, tried blaming me..... and then the game stopped. We never got to do final battles which was a big let down for me so at the time I just left it all behind, and didn't look back.

Is there a decent amount of players still playing?
Anyone looking for a duel partner can help me set up the game to work on windows 7?

I would need someones full attention on getting started back up. I remember never being good at at it to start with. I forgot the basics but eager to learn the race IT again.
We could maybe use yahoo messenger and my teamspeak3 channel for voice.

The easiest way to run Stars! on Windows 7 is to change to the 32-bit Operating system if you don't need the 64-bit for some other software or memory usage (you use more then 4 GB of Ram).

Stars runs normally in the 32-bit versions of Windows 7 & 8(.1) as of 12 aug 2014.

You do have to reinstall the OS to change to 32 bit.

I have read it but don't understand half of it. I do not have windows xp or windows 7 professional.

Neil started explaining yesterday a way with starsdosbox which I believe is a virtual os to run it. Hopefully I can understand what to do because it seems a bit tricky. He lost me when talking about changing path names. Hopefully I'll be playing stars by the end of the week. Sure do miss it.

Hi Slim,

I would strongly suggest you use Oracle's Virtual Box
DL here > https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
and then install an XP iso, which is as simple as
> On the VM box, Click on New
> On the "Create Virtual Machine/Name and operating system", Type a name, select Microsoft Windows in Type, and version would be Windows XP (32 bit). Click Next.
> Memory Size would be anything between 256mb to 1024mb.
> Create Virtual Machine. select "Create a virtual hard disk now". (the 2nd option). Click Create.
> Select VDI or VHD as the hard drive file type.
> Storage on physical hard drive can be either. Go for dynamically allocated if you want, but as I generally pplace my VMs on a USB drive, I make it a fixed size.
Select the size of the virtual drive. Do not select anything less than 3gb. I thought 2gb would be enough when I made my 1st VM, but all the windows bloat + system files had me struggling for space.
Go for 5-10gb as this VM should ideally have all your stars utils + game files + dropbox + gtalk/yahoo/skype installed on it..
> It will show a status bar, that shows the hard disk being allocated.
> Click Start.
Select the startup disk, which will be a mounted ISO file on a clone CD-rom drive OR your existing XP CD.
For using an ISO file, install MagicDisk (freeware) http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm.
Mount the WinXP.iso file using magicdisk and install XP.
If you need help on this step, mail me. You have my email id, iirc.

Once it's done, (might take 30mins - 2 hours depending on your DL speed and getting all the files together), just install Stars! and you are good to go.
Adding dropbox and your utilities will just make it easier.

I could never quite snatch the pebble from your hand but I was pretty darn good at one time. I learned a lot of powerful mechanics from you.
I'm looking forward to figuring out starsdosbox to play again. Might be awhile because I'm having trouble with some terms people use. (Mounting links)
Maybe you or someone could help with screen shots or explain with simple terms I can understand.(I dont mean to be a bother but I'm total noob to file stuff.) I know people say a virtual xp is better but seems much more complicated to me. Ill keep trying to figure one or the other out.
Dual ya sometime.

It's really not that tough... you can ping me on gtalk if you like.
If you want, I can even install it for you if you install TeamViewer on your PC.

Gtalk or gmail chat is so much better than the Yahoo chat client or web based app...

does anybody still use Yahhoo?

is it possible to set up some sort of emulator (VM or Dosbox) that will "auto config" during installation with Stars already wrapped inside?

as in have a download link, then whomever gets it and installs just has to input a serial code and bam, working game?

To an extent, but not quite so simple. There are some on the wiki, but you get waht you pay for. IMO Win7 Pro is the best rout. If you have a XP disk, the virtual box is pretty good too (though it uses more system resources). It would not be legal to post a ready to go Virtual box with XP, and the OS would either have to be cracked, or run the risk of getting it turned off for running on multiple machines.

I'm running stars under linux+wine just fine, so you could set up a (portable) virtual box running linux + wine + stars without any licensing issues. Don't know about any of the other tools, but stars itself runs without problem.

I don't have yahoo msg either.
I tried walking him through the process through PMs and even offered to remote install the VM using teamviewer.
Oh well.
