A question about holidays and turns: I will probably be away for a significant time in July/August. Do games normally run through the summer? Because then I might have to withdraw..

Yes, games usually run normally during summer. Stars! is not a college, after all, you don't get summer breaks.
As for the length of the hold, I'd say it depends on the host and the players... as well as the length of your absence.
If it's a week or two, players usually don't mind the hold. After all, we all know RL comes first. We have jobs, families and other pastimes taking up their fair share of our time.
If it's more, though... it's best to avoid getting in games you know in advance you'll have to hold for a long period of time... or arrange for another player standing in for you, temporarily or permanently.

May be a good idea to have the races verified for viability.
but we need a neutral party to look over the results
i think something like : all interested players can submit to the neutral body, where they got over 20k @ 2450 (AccBBC start, no MaxMin, alone in small packed uni) with his/her "for-this-game" AR race.

OK, I'll make my plans more concrete and see what happens Smile

I would like to repeat my earlier request to do validation on medium/sparse rather than small/packed (since game setup is sparse). For AR, initial expension is crucial due to the sqrt so sparse and packed play really quite different.

(I've not actually made 20k in 2450 for sparse yet, but that might be my problem Smile )

If validation setup is to be changed, then target resources amount needs to be changed as well imho, since game setup does not correlate with validation setup.

I don't really like the testing of races without a set universe, as in Race AR, Random seed ???? ( 0 to 4096), size etcc... in aa .def file

Otherwise I could just find the best universe and use it, it would be easy with 8 90% worlds close to my HW.

The validity check, as I understand it, is intended to assure that all of the players have a minimum level of competence with AR, so that the game is not unbalanced due to poor race design by some of the players.

If any given player is willing to iterate through random seeds in order to get a result that meets the validity check, I strongly suspect that player is sufficiently competent to not unbalance the game.

What we need's a few good taters.

exactly

also i don't see a real difference between med/sparse and small/packed
Like Skoormit said, it is just more of a "validity" test.
until we get a neutral judge for this it is academic

Interesting. I am finding that sparse for AR plays quite differently from packed, due to the importance of spreading out combined with the pop loss in space. I think low/med growth AR is quite a lot more difficult in sparse conditions. But I am nowhere near an expert so I am looking forward to see what you guys are going to put in.

the only real difference is the travel distance
when you play in an empty galaxy you are already saving on having to build ships or mineral routing or any of that jazz
so the difference between a med/sparse and small/packed is minimal

PM is fine. Since the validation check should use the race that you intend to use for the game, you should wait until the host calls for race submissions, then send your validation check game files and your race file to me. I'll look at the validation game, confirm that it meets the requirements and that it used the submitted race, and then forward the race to the host.

Just as a comment (conditions are done by host and/or checker):
Wether somebody uses med/sparse or small/packed... or somebody adds also some AIs to make it a little bit more realistic... I wouldn't care.

Personally I'd use the parameter of the real game with the race design plus as many AIs as expected players... you can always make it more difficult (or more realistic) for yourself as long as you don't go below the requirements. And afterwards you might do it again because you discovered that some tweaking of your race design would be worthwhile...

> skoormit
> I've already offered to review the validity submissions.

Fine.
Otherwise I would had offered to check since this additional requirement seems to be my "fault"/suggestion.

I have my race ready, but I'll wait a while to send it in until after we have a final number of players.

Edit: Ready as in, I have a Small/Packed with 20K of resources in 2450 race that I will play with.

I think the plan is to have a sparser universe - make sure you have plans for the additional journey time.

Hi!
I've just returned from vacation and could play in this game, but the planet count per player (55 with 7 players) is a bit too large for me. Could this issue be discussed?

Hi!
> sure, whats your thoughts?
Medium normal universe stretched to sparse density.
BTW sparse density is hard to AR. Lots of pop death by travel and lots of iron required for shipping. Not that I'm complaining, because this alone will have quite an impact on race design. Wink

> if you sign on it will make 8 player
If I'm reading the last mrvans's post correctly, he's out of this game, so I'd be the 7th.

If skoormit doesn't mind the extra work at set up i would be agreeable to that change.
Any objections?

Also the sparse density is on purpose, the distance for pop deaths, travel times and general distance between stars is part of the game design Smile

yes, 7 players, appearnetly i was having a hard time counting that day Rolling Eyes
