I'll put my address in the hosting so that I get a turn log, and can be contacted to resolve suspected infractions, but I won't actively monitor.

Awesome, so so far we have interest from:

1> Inquisitor80
2> Louciphe
3> theval
4> mrvan

Off to a good start

Also one thing, it would be great at the end of the game(s) that the race parameters be shared along with anything of note in your experience at playing. mistakes or tricks or close calls, that sort of thing. (Not required)

I use 2.60j RC4. Here it's written "that is being used on AutoHost.(Stars! 2.6)". I hope it will do, otherwise I can't play...

Don't worry, you're good to go. The difference between 2.60 and 2.70 is that 2.60 was distributed as shareware, and 2.70 was the retail version published by Empire Interactive. Version 2.70 is also capable of playing sounds during battle. The thing that matters is the letter "j" that follows the version number. You can't play "j"-games with any pre-"j" version (eg. 2.60i or earlier). This is due to the fact that game files formats have been changed and the "j" executable won't read pre-"j" game files correctly. Players on SAH use 2.60j RC4 or 2.70j RC3 (latest issues in both cases), depending on whether they want the sounds in battle or not.

What's with the "no communication between players"? I don't like that. Diplomacy and alliances are part of the fun!
Without in-game co-operation, you just get one "monster" running away with the game without the rest being able to organize to stop him.
Stars! is supposed to be about more than just who has the biggest economy the fastest.

I think it is a way to reduce the time needed for each turn, although I guess it also kills most of the human interaction - the other players might as well be super-good AI...

Never played AR. I have no clue about AR race design but would like to try. Please sign me up. I like no communication or limited comms games. In basic games hosted by little eddie in game messages sent to everyone was allowed. That was nice.

That's quite common.

In the last "AR only" game I know of, the host was demanding a show of commitment and interest in ARs:
# http://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=45 07&start=0&rid=775

For training and to make the game more balanced and interesting, it might be worthwhile to ask for something similar in this game:Quote:
All candidate players are required to submit to the neutral game host a game, where they got over 20k @ 2450 (AccBBC start, no MaxMin, alone in small packed uni) with his/her "for-this-game" AR race.

This way everybody needs to experiment a bit with AR-designs to get more familiar with them. Otherwise it is quite likely that half of the player will start the game with a not suitable or competetive race design... and Mac1 (definetly experienced with ARs) will just wipe the floor with other players' flawed designs and playing styles... which is no thrill nor fun for anybody.

I would advocate a medium+sparse rather than packed small. I think #planets is similar, but the conditions are more like the game settings as posted. Maybe drop the resource requirement a bit, but 20k should still be quite doable.

Given that there is a wealth of good AR design articles on the StarsFAQ website the requirement for the players to testbed their AR races is a good one. For AR newbies, it will be a great opportunity to learn; for AR veterans, to rehearse and hone their skills.
I learned most of what I know about AR design and gameplay by just experimenting with various designs, until I finally came with a design that I was happy with. And I'm not talking about just running an odd testbed and settling for it. I was testbedding them ad nauseam, and then some. Made some 20+ testbeds in that time, some solo, some LFE with a bunch of tough AIs.
ARs are a great PRT to play, they just demand that the players do their homework and have the necessary moves at the fingertips.

I have no problem with a pre-qualification test but would need to know the number of players. Plus or minus a couple ok but if we had 10 players then race design may differ. Please confirm the game setup will not change as well.

Also, since most players will be playtesting something close to their actual design, we would need a non-player party to verify the qualifiers
(or work with screenshots and a honour system - I would be fine with that as well)

Please keep testbedding demands close to game conditions, so if game universe is sparse set the testbed for sparse as well. Early game and hence race design can be quite different for sparse or packed...
