How does dunnage work?

From what I understand, dunnage means that you load all available *after* loading everything else.

So you could set a freighter to

Iron: load all
Bor: load dunnage
Germ: load all

And it will first load all available iron, then load all available germanium, and if there is space left on the freighter, load all available boranium.

Since you normally don't care much about boranium this can be a good set of orders.

Counter-question:
I read somewhere about setting up a "1000kt distribution network", which I presume means sending freighters around to make sure every world has every mineral in decent quantities. However, If I have a freighter on "set waypoint 1000" for all minerals, what I get after a while is a bunch of freighters filled with iron, and the e.g. boranium starved worlds not getting anything. Should I split the freighters into specialized carriers, e.g. 1 iron, 1 bor, and 1 germ carrier, or is there an easier way? (context was IT, so once the routes are setup it goes really well because of the gates...)

The easier way is indeed to split "routes" by mineral type, at least until you run out of fleet slots. As for the optimal most efficient way to do it, if anyone knows, they ain't telling. Sherlock

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal

Right. Well I guess freighters are pretty cheap, and large freighter + IT gates carry a lot of stuff around pretty quickly. A fully mined world at 30% only extracts around 500 per turn per mineral, so a couple large freighters per mineral-producing world should be able to ferry it around. I've never even come close to running out of fleet slots, so I guess I'm in the noob bin Smile

I use "Set amount to ___" depending on what LF/Privateer I'm using.
I then import it to one of my custom orders and reuse it for the next 15-25 years, before I redesign that custom order.

I also use this order,
Fill upto 33% iron, 33% germ, bor dunnage. My stars.ini setting:
ZipOrders4=fbcahbcafbcaaaaaaaaaMineral .33

My 1st custom order is a Colo pickup variant > (either 2750kt, 4000kt, load all)
My 2nd custom order is Pick up all germ (for my factory races)
My 3rd custom order is Pop-drop 2kt (great for bombing runs + tech exchange)
My 4th custom order is the mineral management one.

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

Use more freighters with less waypoints.
And to avoid the highly inefficient effect of full freighters while your planets haven't got enough minerals, dump all or almost all of a type of mineral on the planet with the lowest concentration (eg. SET AMOUNT TO whatever you want to keep in the freighter for the next planet).

Which also hints that it is wise to use automated orders BUT you need to adjust them to your plantes before making the wonderful checkbox for REPEAT ORDERS.

For an IT I use automated freighter orders only for red planets. Within the gatenetwork I use the planet summary (F3) to see rather easily where minerals are needed next turn. After all that is one of the reasons to pay for all this extra pts in the race wizard: less MM, less planning, nevertheless highly flexible... IT.
