Status of stars

I fondly remember playing stars way back when it (and myself) was new and shiny. After rereading some of the strategy articles and playing some AI games, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is still some sort of community active (and a number of sadly abandoned ports to more modern technology). (It plays fine on linux using wine, btw).

What is the state of the community? Are there still a substantial number of active players? Are there public games that one can join?

i recently returned after being gone for 10 years

There is a community of players, though it is not as large as it has been.

The only game about to start up is already full, but there might be more coming, I don't know that for sure.

Best way to get into a new game would be to monitor the announcements subforum, I suppose? I could host/organize a new game, but I have no idea how that works so I guess it would be better to wait first (?)

If you want to organize a game, you can ask for a volunteer to host. I might be able to host a game if you wanted to start a game. If you aren't sure how to organize a game, either look in the new game announcements section to see how others are organized, or just ask for help. There are lots of helpful people here.

Welcome new and returning folks. You might post a show of interest in the bar. I have gotten a lot out of beginner/rusty-old-timer games after returning. Maybe you could rustle up some more newish players for that kind of barn party. Fledgeling admirals is a very good read for getting back up to speed also.
