howdy y'all,

i was wondering who owns the stars! code nowadays. the reason i ask is that i thot a kickstarter project might be a way to BUY the rights to the code and then make it public. i'd happily kick in $50 or $100 for something like that.

then the code could be posted to someplace like github for all to tinker with.

take care,
lee

The first question to ask is

"Is the code still out there?, Does anyone still have a copy of the 'Human readable' code?"

It has been 10 to 15 years, so I don't know

PaulCr seems to have been quite good at debugging the code and made some changes like the StarsPlayerColoursChanger (ahf article).

Other than that the Jeffs, the programmers of Stars!, had always the opinion that the code is so messy and once too optimized for win 3 that every try to make any good changes to this code would be a futile endevour. The general opinion was that it needs to be completly redone...

Yes, I agree that the code would have to be rewritten from scratch. What the original could be good for is to see the logic & math used instead of guessing about it.

It's mostly been figured hasn't it - possibly except the RW?

There's lots of things only partially understood, such as mining and growth, for which a good read of the original code would be invaluable. Sherlock

It could also open the doors wide to some of the easier bugfixes, and even interoperability with other clients/servers. Teleport

The RW was a black hole until someone disassembled it. Cheers

howdy y'all,

for some reason, i never got any notices that this thread had been replied to. so i didn't respond to your msgs. sorry! [*blush*]

if the jeffs still own the code rights, then is there any way to contact them and ask to buy it?

i'm not concerned about it being "krufty". [*grin*] i just like the game as a now-and-then singly player game. it would be nice to get the details on how the guts really work. plus, i would like to simply have the code available for if [when] i manage to lose the silly activation code.

compiling it would be rather iffy for me, but i know a few guys who would be willing to help me set up the student edition of microsoft's various code compilers.

removing the activation code requirement is itself worth $50 to $100 for me.

in any case, thanks for your various responses! [*grin*]

take care,
lee
