I was in a couple of games a while back (Dig It! and Sixpack3). While playing them, I got the AutoHost Java client v2.11 working. That was on Linux.

I'm back playing Stars! and I'm in Stone Age Slaughter 7. And running Stars! on Vista. I can get the web interface to work, but AutoHost Java client v2.2 just doesn't want to play.

Here's the log. Any thoughts?

My AutoHost stopped yesterday.

I had to download and install the latest Java from http://www.java.com/en/

my problem wasn't the Autohost but Java just stopped working

After it first failed, I'd updated my Java to the lastest. The log is from a run after the update. The client appears to be running but can't communicate.

Now I think of it, I don't get a warning from ZoneAlarm saying the program is trying to access the Internet. I may be using one previously established by Java.

Well, I turned my internet off and restarted the Client and it gave me the same log report as yours.

So for some reason your Java is not getting web access. I guess

You hit upon the problem. Tried running the Autohost Java client while running ZoneAlarm in disabled game mode and still wasn't working. Then I ran it back on my Linux machine and it works.

So for some reason it's being blocked from network access in Vista. Don't know why.

I will likely move playing Stars! back to Linux as I'm more likely to resolve the little issues I have over there.

And fixed it on Vista. Used the Control panel Java control to tell Java not to use the browser permissions but to direct connect to the network. And then it worked.

EDIT

Wrong! Not working. Can't get the .jar to contact Autohost on Vista. Sad

This is irritating.

On Linux (using the latest Wine) things mostly work. But I have problems with the display of the Stars! help file (problem displaying WinHelp) and the text in Stars Notebook displays wrong in some fill-in fields.

But on Vista I can't get the Autohost Java client to work.

Darn it all!

And I have a fix for Vista. And this may apply to more than just Vista.

Use Java JRE6 for the Autohost Java client ahclient.jar. On Vista it doesn't work under JRE7.

On Linux, where it works, I saw the Java is openjdk-6. So I tried JRE6 on Vista. And the client works fine.

Couldn't figure out how to make it use JRE6 if JRE7 is installed, so I just have JRE6. As JRE7 currently has a major unpatched bug, that a bonus.

I've send an email to Jeffrey Hoyt, the Autohost client support on SourceForge, detailing this (and 2 other minor issues).
